this ghazal was written during the 1971 crisis in which east pakistan seperated from the rest of pakistan and became bangladesh…
I saw a program in which the poet said “ye nazm abhi tak taza hai” … meaning we are still doing all the things mentioned in this nazm.
main ye kis ke naam likhooN jo alamm guzar rahay haiN
mere shehar jal rahay haiN, mere log marr rahay haiN
koi guncha ho ke gul ho, koi shaakh ho shajar ho
wo hawaa-e-gulistaaN hai ke sabhi bikhar rahay haiN
kabhi rehmataiN thiN nazil issi khita-e-zameeN par
wohi khitta-e-zamee’n hai ke azaab utar rahay haiN
wohi taairoN ke jhurmaT jo hawa maiN jhooltay thay
wo fizaa ko dekhtay haiN to ab aah bhar rahay haiN
bari aarzoo thi humko nai khaab dekhnay ki
so ab apni zindagi maiN nay khaab bhar rahay haiN
koi aur to nahi hai pass-e-khanjar aazmaai
humeiN qatal ho rahy haiN, humeiN qatal kar rahay haiN
the poet actually sings this in his own voice too… and its very gud.
