^^
My information is from various history books and articles (or books referring various past history books) read over the years. If you want to, please read Islamic history by various historians (should get translation of earlier writers) or you could get good Islamic history book from anywhere. (I was reasonably student of Islamic history)
Actually, there are many books written by various historians:
Books written by: Ibn Khaldun (kitab al-Ibar), Ibn Hisham (sirat-ul-Rasul), Ibn al-Tiqtaqa (Kitab al-Fakhri), Umar Abu al-Nasr, abu-al-fajar (Kitab al-Aghani), Ameeer Ali (A short history of the Saracens), Shibli Noumani (Al Farooq), (Al-Mamun), Syed Sulaiman Nadvi (sirat al-Nabi), Abu Ala Maudoodi (Khilafat aur Malukiat) etc.

Re: ~! Yazid? Was he really what they make him out to be?
You are right it is a bit shocking (for those who do not know how Umayyad used to rule). Umayyad never encouraged conversion, and had Christians everywhere in good position, though the running of the state was like having Arab kingdom where Arabs were preferred over non-Arabs (at that time, Arab meant only Arabian Peninsula). Actually, they use to discourage conversion and most of the time they use to treat non-Arab Muslims as non-Muslims.
Umar bin Abdul Aziz (RA) was first Umayyad that encouraged conversion. Umayyad way of think was that conversion means less jaziya. This was also one factor that many joined the revolt with Abbasid against Umayyad (because many non-Arab Muslims were upset from getting Non-Muslim treatment).
Actually, commander of the army that attacked Medina was a Muslim, a one eyed Muslim general (I do not remember his name). While moving to Mecca for attack, that general died and another Muslim general took over. Still, most in the army were Christian.

I dont know who are those ulema whom you call big. Let us see if Imam Jalauddin Suyuti is ‘big’ or not in your eyes? Let me make your work easy, by posting (liknk of) his biography kitaabun-Classical and Contemporary Muslim and Islamic Books

And now let us see what he has to say about Yazeed:
“Allah’s curse be opon all three Ibn Ziyad, Yazeed and the killer of Imam Hussain”
Tareekh ul Khulafa (Urdu) page 208, published by Nafees Academy Karachi
Another prominent and most importantly pioneer Sunni Imam Saad-uddin Taftazani (712-791) about whom Imam Ibn Hajar Asqalani records:
Masood bin Umar al-Taftazani, the great scholar, the author of Sharh al-Talkhis, Sharh al-Aqed fi Usool al-Deen, Sharh al-Shamsya fi al-Manteq and Sharh al-Tasreef al-Ezi which some say as his first book, al-Irshad fi al-Nahoo; he summarized it, al-Hajebya wa al-Maqasid fi Usool al-Deen; he wrote commentary for it, al-Talweeh fi Usool Fiqh al-Hanafia; it is a margin commentary for Tawdeeh Sadr al-Sharia, margin commentary for Sharh al-Mukhrasar of al-Qadhi `Adududdin, margin commentary of al-Kashaf… he also wrote other books in various fields of knowledge which have been commented, obtained and preserved by the scholars. He was the extremely knowledgeable in the field of eloquence and logic, more in East rather in the all countries; there wasn?t anyone in comparison to his knowledge. He died in the month of Safar in year 792 and no one was there who would be able to take his place, he was born in 712 as its written by Ibn al-Jazri, Shehab al-Deen ibn Arabshah al-Hanafi said to me that Sheikh Alaa al-Deen mentioned that Sheikh Saad al-Deen died in year 791 at the age of 80.

Now et us see what he wrote in his book Sharah Maqaasid:
“The harms that were inflicted on the Ahl’ul bayt after the Sahaba are acts that cannot be covered up. These acts were so heinous that they cannot be hidden - all including animals testify to their suffering. Their pain was such that the earth and skies shed tears and beat themselves when their suffering is retold - and retelling this shall continue until the Day of Judgement. May Allah’s curse be upon those that perpetuated injustices, and those that helped them (to carry out these acts). The curse on these individuals shall be even greater in the next world. If some Ulema are opposed to cursing, then it should be known that Yazeed deserves more than just cursing”.
Re: ~! Yazid? Was he really what they make him out to be?
Sa1eem, aren't you a shia in disguise? I mean i accept teh differences with shias but this disguise thing puts me off. Also this story of Yazid army being christian is false.
And it was army of AbdulMalik Bin Marwan which ransacked Makkah and not of Yazid, Yazid had died by that time.
Re: ~! Yazid? Was he really what they make him out to be?
the problem lies with shias...they just cannot stop themselves from cursing shahabas and here tht the sectarian violence and hatred spread...
i have never seen any sunni alim or imam creating a big issue out of yazid and the like...but shias tend to curse shahabas openly....
shias need to change their behaviour and the problem will end..
Re: ~! Yazid? Was he really what they make him out to be?
I'm sure by now the different sides have expressed their views and beliefs. I don't see this discussion going any further. Therefore, I'm closing it.
Please drop me a PM if anyone feels the thread really needs to be reopened.
