Russian junk should be blamed, not the poor pilot.

Honey,

I don’t have to do research. The material speaks itself.

It’s not what you know, it’s what you can proof!

…and IAF made Russian junk proving that! Bloah!

Quote from the article: 'The loss of yet another aircraft and indeed the loss of innocent lives on the ground is another embarrassment for the Indian Air Force which has a reputation of having some of the highest crash rates in the world. ’

IAF to phase out MiG-21 F/L Version

This was announced after Defence Minister George Fernandes chaired a high level meeting of the Air Force and Ministry of Defence officials on the recent spate of fighter jet crashes, some of which caused civilian casualties

Attributing the growing number of accidents to the vintage technology of the 1960 and 70s, the Air Force impressed upon the government the need to seek design data of Russian and British aircraft like the Mig variants and Jaguars.

Oh no, another Mig goes down.

MiG crash underscrores pressing need for AJTs
RAJAT PANDIT

TIMES NEWS NETWORK SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2002 09:50:44 PM ]

NEW DELHI: The crash of yet another MiG-21 on Thursday has once again highlighted the Indian Air Force’s desperate need for Advanced Jet Trainers (AJTs) to train rookie pilots.

And the fact that the MiG-21 that crashed was performing the role of an AJT on a trainee sortie only buttresses the case even further.

Inadequate training to the men behind the machines in the absence of AJTs and advanced flight simulators often leads to “human errors”, which in turn are a major reason behind the spate of crashes.

“Technical defects”, of course, constitute the other big factor. Between 1991 and 2000, there were as many as 283 aircraft accidents in the IAF, with 100 pilots losing their lives.

Defence Minister George Fernandes on Thursday claimed that an expert team, including Russian scientists, visiting different airbases had not found any technical defects in the MiG fighters so far.

So, let’s concentrate on the training aspect. The plane which crashed near the Bagdogra airbase on Thursday morning was a twin-seater MiG-21 ‘Type 69’ used for training purposes. Initial reports hold that an “error of judgment in bad weather” could have led to the crash.

“A MiG-21 should not be used as a trainer since it is a very demanding aircraft… we have to make do with it since our two-decade-old demand for an AJT is yet to be fulfilled,” said an IAF officer.

The IAF feels a MiG-21 trainer is “not an optimum” aircraft for training missions. AJTs, in turn, would help trainee pilots make the quantum jump from flying a subsonic aircraft like the Kiran intermediate trainers to supersonic high-performance fighters like the MiG-21s.

IAF pilots are basically trained in three stages. The first stage is conducted on the HPT-32 basic trainer aircraft, followed by stage-II training on Kiran trainers. Incidentally, doubts have been raised about the reliability of even these trainers.

In the absence of lead-in fighter trainers like the AJTs to teach the basics of tactical and air combat flying in stage-III, trainee pilots are forced to graduate directly to MiG-21s without any transitional training.

“MiG-21 trainers have their own limitations for imparting training. Instructors in these trainers, for instance, find it tough to teach since visibility from the rear cockpit is extremely limited,” said an officer.

Consequently, the majority of ‘human error’ accidents are caused due to inadequate flying skills, errors of judgment, lack of situational awareness and inability to negotiate bad weather conditions.

“A pilot is more susceptible to human errors during his initial six hundred hours of flying,” said an officer.

......and that makes the total of 26 crash this year so far.

Oh no, not another one !!

What is this, new year gift! IAF has met its quota of 24 / year.
