Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

To me it’s grossly unfair that he’s banned AND fined for his “interview” with the News of the World newspaper in which he talks about match-fixing in Pakistan cricket. First of all, Yasir didn’t give any interview, he thought he was talking to a sports agent. Secondly, Yasir has denied that he made the allegations, but that he was simply repeating the story from NOTW. Thirdly, even if he were making the allegations, those allegations have now proven true. So what’s the point of banning him now?

The story from Cricinfo follows:

Hameed banned for NOTW interview

*Yasir Hameed, the Pakistan batsman, has been banned by the PCB from domestic cricket for his interview with an undercover reporter from News of the World in the immediate aftermath of the spot-fixing controversy.

In the interview, Hameed had discussed the fall-out of the Lord’s Test, the Sydney Test against Australia early last year and a possible approach by a bookie. The precise length of the ban has not been specified but it is thought to apply only to the ongoing Pentangular Cup and the domestic T20 championship that will follow. He has also been fined Rs.300,000 (US$3,500 approx).

Nadeem Sarwar, the board spokesperson, said Hameed had been banned “for his spot-fixing allegations against some national players in a newspaper interview last year”. Hameed has always denied making any allegations, claiming that he merely repeated what the tabloid had already reported.

At the time Hameed said he was duped by the investigative reporter who came to him in a hotel in Nottingham as a representative from a global airline to discuss possible sponsorship deals, but apologised to the PCB immediately after. “I was trapped into it but I should not have said all that before a stranger and I apologise to all the players who were hurt because of that,” he had said.

Hameed was also summoned to the Pakistan High Commission in London to explain his utterances during the sting operation, and he recently lodged a formal complaint against NOTW with the UK’s Press Complaints Commission, accusing them of inaccurate reporting, breach of privacy, misrepresentation of character and harassment. He also alleged that the man, an Abid Khan, had sent him intimidating SMSs after the meeting once Hameed had denied what had been attributed to him.

Hameed, 32, represents Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province in the Pentangular Cup. The ban is the result of an investigation into the matter by the PCB’s recently-constituted Integrity Committee, in front of which Hameed appeared last month.

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

Well they should have fined him for lack of discretion when talking to outsiders on internal team issues. However since it was a pure "setup" from NOTW and a fishing expedition followed by total mess ups by Igaaz butt...there was no NEED for a ban.

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

interesting that they wouldn't ban the fixers and ICC had to step in!

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

He deserves the ban. Regardless of what and whom he thought he was talking to he should not have been saying those things about his team mates to total strangers. Serves him right.

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

They wouldn't ban the fixers because the case was already beinginvestigated by ICC and the British police. They did however withdraw all facilities to them.

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

sounds a bit harsh. Even if he was duped into saying those things he should not have been discussing such sensitive matters with anyone-else except his teammates in the first place

As they say do not ever discuss religion or politics with anyone

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

well if those allegations were proved to be false then i understand the ban. but if he was right then why kill the messenger.

whatever happened to that guy who defected to UK.

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

I was talking about before ICC 'suspended' them because PCB was defending them at that time with all their 'might'.

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

The point is why should any cricketer even be saying those things to anyone-else except their teammates and board. It is stupid and irresponsible

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

He didnt make those allegations, he was just shwoing off in front of some guys who he thought were abotu to give him an advertising contract.

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

So why the ban then? Is PCB going to control each and everything the players say in private? He didn't give an interview. He was talking to someone who secretly recorded the conversation.

Re: Yasir Hameed banned for making matchfixing allegations

Privately you dont go around bad mouthing your colleagues in order to gain some favour with guys you hardly know. The punishment meted out to him is fair. He has not been banned for life just for one season.
