*LAHORE: Pakistan’s fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar in a bid to maintain his fitness at the optimum level and avoid any foot injuries uses specially made boots, each pair costing 500 pounds (about 53,000 Pakistani rupees), while playing at the Test and One-day International level.

Shoaib, who made a comeback to the Pakistan team with a big bang against England taking 17 wickets in the Test matches, had the boots designed after facing problems in the landing zone and with his ankle some years back and now carries at least five pairs in his kit bag.

The enigmatic pacer has faced fitness problems in the past leading to several controversies but since his comeback has played in all the games for Pakistan except when he was rested for the final one-dayer against England that Pakistan lost at Rawalpindi.

He is currently playing with a bruised ankle caused by the heavy load and pressure he puts on his feet in his follow through which is why the special boots have been designed to ensure he does not face a serious fitness problem.

Shoaib played in the one-day series against England with a bruised ankle which is strapped regularly to ensure it does not get worse.

Interestingly, there were rumours flying around on Tuesday after the first Test that Shoaib had injured the ankle during the match and was facing fitness problems but this was denied by the Pakistan team management.
