Y is mathematics important?

Sincere question.
Please give you views, i need to prepare a talk on this. helppppppppppp

Everyone says its important but no one explains y it is important.

Math is important 2-fold, in my view:

  1. it hones your analytical skills—a must in today’s world, and
  2. it gets you to demonstrate thought processes in a numeric fashion, as did philosophers of antiquity so that they could “rationalize” thinking by getting it down to a science.

:bukbuk:

Thanks for your comments moona. :)

It was historically an area of immense academic success for the muslim world, and as such we can take pride in it. Algebra is our creation and they use our number system, and Ibn Khaldoun (sp) is the "father of modern historiography" (My professor said that)-bnot related, but nice to note.

I think its because Mathematics is generally the first step toward solving any new problem, related to any field at all. It gives us the solution in theory at least even though it might be impossible in practice.

It is the standard method of communication in the human being's logical and analytical spheres, just as languages or english is in the verbal/discriptive spheres. It also underlies the basic modern scientific method of analysis.

It is cuz Math is an essential subject.... and now it is used everywhere.....
u shud have a grip on math since beginning.... then u will b successfulll....
(well im failing in algebra:D)

As a Math enthusisat, my answer to you would be that for me this is the only "creative" discipline that transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised - there aren't a lot of subjects these days that can apply as universally as it does...

finally, it provides you with the tools that include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways.

Its important that u get a flavor of the various types of sub-subjects in Maths... for my undergrad, courses in Math that I hated were Calculus related i.e. Partial Differential Equations and Linear Algebra - it becomes to repetitive after a certain point in time...

Courses I loved included:
Abstract Mathematics,
Number Theory,
Chaos & Fractals
History of Mathematics...

hope that helps Serendipiti :)
