I want to buy either of them for my younger brother so a bit of advice would be helpful. I have checked in the market and prices are almost same with a negligible difference.
So if someone could opine about the games variety, graphics quality of the console and durability, that would be helpful.

I had the PS2 for around 2years. it was the shizzle until the XBOX showed up. Now the PS2 is hooked up in my car and it barely gets used. Both are durable. I like XBOX cost around $10 a month while it’s free on the PS2. Both are durable. Graphics the nods go to XBOX, it also has a 20Gigs hard drive that I have lots mucis DL’ed to it.
The only good thing going for the PS2 is that it has a large librairy of good games.
Halo and (soon to be released) Halo 2 are worth buying the XBOX for. :k:

And there are wayyyyyy more and better games for the ps2 then for then XBOX.
Besides tht, I dunno hpw the game prices are at your place, but here ONE NEW GAME COSTS 60 EURO!!!
and for the ps2 you can buy copied games. It s mutch cheaper. But you will have to let some one mod the PS2
^^ There are many chips to mod your XBOX. I thought you knew that? 
Aside from chips, you can go to your local Blockbuster, reant a game and burn it on your hard drive all for under $5. I doubt the PS2 can do that.
I have the PS2 and don’t use it at all now. After playing the XBOX, the PS2 does’nt cut it anymore. It’s collecting dust in my car.

Ha Ha … I hooked it up in my car just for the hell of it. It’s not safe to drive and play video. 
As I m in Pakistan, I will have the luxury of buying games for as low as 100 rupees. And yes I have checked that XBox has a a very short range of games as compared to PS2, which has around 5000 games in the market.

It's definitely much better than PS2. Don't forget to purchase Halo if you decide to get Xbox.
