I get the one red light in lower right quardrant, and error code E74. Warranty is out, and Microsoft wants $100 to repair it.
Do you guys think it’s worth it? I was going to try and strip it down, reseat the heatsinks and apply fresh paste. But ultimately, I might just go for a PS3 instead.
What do you suggest? How many of you have run into this problem before? I’ve read a lot on people who’ve had RROD (Red Ring of Death), and E74s. Youtube is literally flooded with videos on how to “fix” it.
That's too bad. If your warranty is out, that must mean it's over 3 years old. I don't know what kind of investment you've already made for it (i.e. how many games/accessories etc. If you haven't made that much of an investment in it, then the PS3 is a good deal and both platforms share a of third party titles.
If you feel that you've invested too much into the 360 to jump ship now, well, the new Jasper revision is supposedly more reliable and you'd be covered for another 3 years (for RROD at least).
I can tell you something related to saving some money, which works many of the times. Like you go to AMAZON.com and look for products, see for resellers who are NOT from your STATE... by this you wont be charged for a single penny as TAX.
but if you go to Walmart or Sony, you will for sure be charged for TAX, cause both of them are in every state. However AMAZON it self is in very few states, also most of AMAZONs resellers are from different states :)....

That's a great idea too. Will explore amazon.com for price comparison. Alternatively, I think i could do ebay as well, but i'm a little hesitant about what I buy on ebay.

Well I am an avid amazon buyer, have purchased a lot from them from electronics, perfumes to even Dettol!!! ( yeah yeah Dettol ) , since Dettol is not easily available in US.
Anyways, I would go any time for PS3, specially the new one coming PS3 slim with 250GB. Xbox has its own sort of problem, which MS does not seem to come out. Btw, most of the electronics is directly shipped by AMAZON. So saving is for Sure, untill unless you live in the state where Amazon has an office or wareshouse.
