I donāt know why everyone has been saying such good things about this movie. I thought the first one was miles better.
Things I didnāt like about X-Men 2:
{Spoilers Warning}
[li]Finale:
[/li]
There was no āfinaleā. The Statue of Liberty scene at the end of X-Men was a perfect example of a great finale. A big showdown in a spectacular location where everyone gets together and fights it out. Where was the finale in this movie?
[li]Flying, eh:
[/li]
Where was all the flying? I realise that the X-Men donāt have to fly in order to win, and I also realise that only a few of them can fly. But after seeing them fly in the first film I was really looking forward to seeing it again. Especially after seeing the fantastic airborne battles between Spiderman and The Green Goblin last year. The closest anyone came to flying was when Magneto rode on a flying metal disc, which was cool.
[li]Evil hideout:
[/li]
I didnāt like the underground hideout near a dam. Seemed a bit corny and a bit dismal.
[li]Boring:
[/li]
The film had a really slow start. Hardly anything happened in the first half hour. Was there any point to having a 5 minute scene of Wolverine walking around in the snow smoking a cigar?
[li]Emotion? Yeah right:
[/li]
Unlike the first movie, which was packed full of emotion and character building, this movie had virtually no emotional undertone to it. The only emotion in the whole film was the brief scene where Logan comes on to Gene and kisses her.
The first movie was a very emotional and human story about personal discovery and racial prejudice. This movie was all about⦠er⦠anyone?
[li]Killer-Babe:
[/li]
I absolutely hated that āfemale Wolverineā. She was on over the top slut and such an obvious attempt to get the male audience drooling. Putting her in a tight leather catsuit and dolling her up for a fight scene just made me cringe. Canāt a female be a baddie unless sheās a supermodel?
Oh, and I really hope it wasnāt supposed to be a surprise that she was a āWolverineā all along. Because the clip of her showing her blades is just about the only thing Iāve seen on TV this past couple of months.
[li]**Cyclops is bad now?: **
[/li]
At one point, Cyclops appears to get captured by the bad guys. The next time we see him (about an hour later) he fires a shot at Magneto and Mystique who are walking in front of Gene. From this one shot, Gene infers that Cyclops is now under an evil influence (even though he only fired at the two bad guys) and Gene immediately stars attacking her boyfriend without saying so much as a single line of dialogue to explain to the viewers that heās probably under evil influence.
And then, seconds after a heated battle where Cyclops is blasting the heck out of Gene. He suddenly comes up and gives her a hug. That mind control thing wore off pretty darned quickly!
[li]Great ending:
[/li]
She dies. They get all upset and mourn her. Then we see her talking while the shape of a phoenix appears over the water. How is anyone supposed to understand that ending unless theyāre familiar with the comics?
[li]**Where will they all sleep?: **
[/li]
So the mutantsā school/hideout is no longer a secret.
The raid was on every news channel on the planet by the looks of things. Where are they going to live now? No mention of this problem at the end of the film of course. Weāll have to wait until the third film to know that the mutants are safe.
[li]**I think Iāll be evil today: **
[/li]
Errrr⦠so now Pyro has become a member of Magnetoās evil group? This sort of āgoing over to the dark sideā is a welcome addition to a movie - where itās justified. But this movie made no attempt to put in the groundwork to Pyroās descent into evil. One minute heās a good guy with a bit of a temper, then he sits next to Magneto and has a 30 second chat, and then the next minute heās a fully fledged baddie! Wow.
[li]**New characters: **
[/li]
What new characters? Sorry if I was given the wrong impression, but before I saw this movie I was under the impression that we would meet some new X-Men or new bad guys. We got ONE new character. Nightcrawler, yeah yeah. A character who played a very minimal part in the movie. Oh, and donāt forget we lost two characters from the original movie (Sabretooth and Toad).
[li]Pointless scene:
[/li]
The scene where Mystique snuck into Wolverineās tent and pretended to be Gene was a nice touch. However it would have been much more welcome if it was justified by the plot. ie if she had an actual reason to go into his tent. Perhaps she could have been trying to find something out from him? Perhaps she could have beein trying to hurt him? No⦠she apparently just went in there for a laugh and it had no relevance to the plot whatsoever.
[li]**Who died and made Wolverine king?: **
[/li]
It wouldnāt be wrong to say that the first X-Men movie was very much all about Wolverine. The story was more or less told from his perspective, as we discovered who the X-Men were and how Wolverine got his metal skeleton.
So, after one whole movie almost dedicated to Wolverine, which of the X-Men get to take centre stage in the second movie? Er⦠apparently itās Wolverineās turn again. I guess the creators decided that all the other X-Men arenāt really very important compared to Wolverine. Letās make him the star.
[li]**What happened to Geneās hair?: **
[/li]
In the first movie, Gene was this really gorgeous long haired brunette⦠in the second movie she has short ginger hair. Eeew! I honestly didnāt recognise her until someone said her name, and then I was a little taken aback.
[li]**Thatās good varnish: **
[/li]
Pyro stands in his porch and trashes his neighbourhood with fireballs. Explosions. Police cars flying everywhere. And then afterwards⦠oh, his house looks immaculate.
Okay, I didnāt hate it all. I loved the schase scene with the jets. (Although it seemed a little contrived just to make an action scene. I mean, we didnāt even see anyone issue the order to attack the jet).
By far the best part of the whole film was Magnetoās escape from his cell. That was the kind of thing that should have happened all the way through the movie. If only the film had gotten better from that point like Iād hoped, instead of peaking.
Iām really sorry because I love X-Men and I wanted this movie to be as good as the first one, but it really bored me and it just felt like a pale immiatation of the original movie.
Perhaps itās simply because the first movie was just a totally pleasant surprise and I had no idea what to expect. Whereas this one had to live up to a lot of expectations. But I honestly didnāt enjoy it anywhere near as much as I enjoyed the first one.
