Writers who refused Awards

Lets share something about writers he refused awards or gave back the awards given to them due to certain reasons.

I start with French writer Jean-Paul Sartre who refused Nobel Prize in Literature for the year 1964.

As per Swedish Academy’s announcement, he was awarded Nobel for his work which, rich in ideas and filled with the spirit of freedom and the quest for truth, has exerted a far-reaching influence on our age.

Reason for Refusal in Sartre’s own words:

My reasons for refusing the prize concern neither the Swedish Academy nor the Nobel Prize in itself, as I explained in my letter to the Academy. In it, I alluded to two kinds of reasons: personal and objective.

The personal reasons are these: my refusal is not an impulsive gesture, I have always declined official honors. In 1945, after the war, when I was offered the Legion of Honor, I refused it, although I was sympathetic to the government. Similarly, I have never sought to enter the Collège de France, as several of my friends suggested.

This attitude is based on my conception of the writer’s enterprise. A writer who adopts political, social, or literary positions must act only with the means that are his own—that is, the written word. All the honors he may receive expose his readers to a pressure I do not consider desirable. **If I sign myself Jean-Paul Sartre it is not the same thing as if I sign myself Jean-Paul Sartre, Nobel Prizewinner. **

Famous Indian writer Khushwant Singh returned back India's third highest civilian award 'Padma Bushan' in 1984 (after 10 years when he was awarded with the Bushan in 1974) due to Operation Bluestar in against Sikh community and siege of Golden Temple, Amritsar.

Re: Writers who refused Awards

Ahmed Faraz returned the Hilal-i-Imtiaz conferred on him for his literary achievements in 2004. He returned the award in 2006 after becoming disenchanted with the government and its policies. He said in a statement:

“My conscience will not forgive me if I remained a silent spectator of the sad happenings around us. The least I can do is to let the dictatorship know where it stands in the eyes of the concerned citizens whose fundamental rights have been usurped. I am doing this by returning the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (civil) forthwith and refuse to associate myself in any way with the regime…”
