Wrangle Threatens Peacekeeping Mission
1:25 pm PST, 21 January 2005
The deployment of up to 10,000 United Nations peacekeepers to southern Sudan may be delayed because of a disagreement over which countries will contribute troops.
The Khartoum government and Sudan People’s Liberation Army signed an agreement almost two weeks ago to end Africa’s longest running conflict, paving the way for the deployment of a UN force to monitor a permanent ceasefire.
Several countries have reportedly offered troops for the mission including Egypt, Kenya, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia and India.
However, the rebel group has expressed reservations about the predominance of Muslim nations on the list.
More than two decades of war in Sudan’s south, sparked by Khartoum’s attempt to impose sharia law on the rest of the country, have killed two million people and forced millions more to flee their homes.
