Staff Report

LAHORE: The World Punjabi Congress (WPC) has decided to resist the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) decision to declare Urdu as the NWFP’s official language.

The decision was taken in the WPC Advisory Council meeting here on Friday chaired by Fakhar Zaman. The meeting said the decision would be opposed by progressive elements, as it would threaten Pakistan’s popular culture and regional languages. It appreciated the Punjab government’s response regarding the promotion of Punjabi language and culture and allowing Punjabi in the provincial assembly. It reiterated its demand that Punjabi be declared the medium of instruction up to primary level and give jobs to nine thousand Punjabi MA degree holders. The council also reviewed arrangements for World Punjabi Conference to be held in Delhi from January 12 to 14, 2003.

I was not aware that WPC was the spokesman for NWFP now! Why aren't people in NWFP speaking out?

Don’t you love Punjabis? :hehe:
