Re: Would you Vote either of them????
yes, if I get the chance, I will vote for PPP. it isn't about Bilawal or any personality.. it is about the party. PPP represents liberal values. it is a truly national party. ideally, I would like to see the PPP led by Aitzaz Ahsan, Raza Rabbani, Sherry Rehman, etc. but the Bhutto name still has appeal in the masses. and if the cream of the PPP leadership - people I respect - is fine with Bilawal, then so am I.
initially, I was also disgusted beyond belief when Bilawal was announced as co-chairman. but once you think critically about the political culture in Pakistan, it makes perverse sense.
yes, in an ideal world, your relationship with the leadership would have nothing to do with how far you got in politics. but you have to look closely at the politics in Pakistan. if you look back at previous PPP govts and how the ISI chief was actively trying to buy MNAs to bring down the PPP govt, what do you expect the party to do except to close ranks and trust only those expected to not betray it? and if you're going to trust anyone, chances are you are going to trust family, blood relations. despite the kind of torture that Zardari underwent, he did not betray BB. he suffered but remained loyal.
look at Nawaz Sharif. after the coup, vast majority of his people betrayed him. what did Sheikh Rasheed, Chauhdrys, Mushahid Hussain do to him? they all betrayed him. is it any surprise that he trusts his own family - Shahbaz, Hamza, Ishaq Dar - more than anyone else?
it is the fault of our political culture... where a lot of forces are constantly working to buy the loyalties of politicians and bring down govts. so, it is inevitable that political parties will close ranks and become more about loyalty than meritocracy.
want that changed? come out on the street when the army makes moves against democracy. don't distribute mithai - protest just like we did when Musharraf destroyed the Supreme Court. if you're not willing to fight for the respect your vote deserves, then live with the lineage-based democracy. you and I deserve it.
