Change begins from home. Do we really know who the candidates were in the last elections? All we know is whether to stamp on the ‘arrow’ or the ‘leopard’. We dont even know the names of candidates apart from large 2/3 parties contesting elections in our area. We vote for Bhutto or Sharif or Altaf, not for our ‘representatives’. The result: Zardari had the courage to give party ticket for by-elections to Jamshaid Dasti who was only recently humiliated in Supreme Court. I am sure thousands would vote for ‘teer’ unaware of the person they are trying to elect to parliament.
While we do not make an effort to be politically aware and active, what change we can expect?
The situation is darkened by the fact that politicians know generals would take over soon and make as much profit out of whatever time they have. We don’t even protest when the boots come marching in to conquer the country. We, a nation with short-term memory, will elect them all again when the generals have had enough fun for a decade or so.
