Would you teach your children any kind of “martial arts”?
I would send my children to some kind of martial arts classes because we are living in times of rising islamophobia and muslim children in europe and north america are likely to be bullied at school. Under these circumstances, the next generation of muslim children should have such an upbringing that they are brave and know how to defend themselves.
I myself very rarely faced any overt racism while growing up in Canada and USA. But some of my cousins and muslim friends did face verbal abuse and bullying at school for being muslims, not just from white children but also from hispanics and even hindus.
It's good but parents should be careful not to make their kids paranoid about others....paranoia like, "everyone hates us" coz fear causes hatred. A Pakistani boy in my 4th grader's class is being a bit of problem by telling my son that Christmas is a bad thing and Muslims are better than Christians. He's been fighting with non-muslim kids over religion....and it's a preparatory school in UK I'm talking about.
I saw this as a big problem and so we talked to his parents, but for them it's not a big issue, sadly.
So where learning martial arts and defending themselves against bullying is important, it is also important to teach our kids to love other humans regardless of their race and religion and protect the weak and learn to forgive.
I would send them to some classes, but I would not bring in religion as a reason, because at this day and age there are other things happening as well. To know how to defend yourself physically (specially for a girl), is never bad.
martial arts or any sport for that matter teaches self confidence and belief. Also places value on the importance of team work and leading a team. I would definetly make sure they were at least part of the school football team or what not. Another thing is that when i took up boxing, my parents were fine with it and as long as it didnt effect my grades they backed me. But majority of desi parents (from my observation) seem to be against kids joining any school teams or anything. Im a firm believer that sports teaches you things you simply cant learn in the classroom
I would definitely teach my kids martial arts or some form of self defense .. Its definitely very much needed in today's time and age.
Having said that its important that when one becomes powerful, they also learn to control that power and never to use it on the vulnerable and even if they are using this skill anytime in life , they should use it within reason.
What Hareem and the OP said about bullying. Thats where kids need to learn Emotional Defense and tactics to deal with such negative people around them.
Martial Arts is physical defense. Which should help them if they ever get physically attacked.

And that's exactly why I like the Kido classes my son goes to. They do not only cover the physical side of it but also the social aspect, ie how to avoid physical conflict altogether.

my daughter has taken martial arts classes since she was 3.5 years old in pre-school.
I found that the lessons didn't just teach her to protect herself but it taught her discipline, respect and how to value and take care of her body.
