Re: would you marry a “mentally challenged [retarded]” person knowingly?
^ LOLz
Well mentally challenged maybe I mean no laughs here please I once fell for a blind woman but never had a chance to express my feelings, and i knew another girl who was not quite all there… you know slightly beffudled and still I thought life would not be bad.
I feel sorry for the poor woman who fell for my homicidal tendencies but then again sometimes she’s encouraging them
It depends on the severity of the illness. I’m sure theres plenty of mentally abnormal people who live relatively happy married lives.

it would be a difficult life being in a relationship with a mentally challenged person. I feel bad for them though, feel anger towards God for making them that way and they have such miseries in life, but when they have such a childlike thinking and won't be able to handle an adult relationship, it just would not be possible to be married to them.
and i'm not just talking about sex but taking care of the children or just simple things driving to work, going to work, getting a job.

Okay, just because I am uber-PC, I HATE the term "retarded" - it's not nice :( You can the word as a verb but not as an adjective, please and thank-you!
Re: would you marry a "mentally challenged [retarded]" person knowingly?
I think it would be challenging to "dupe" someone into marrying a person who is mentally challenged. I would question the "sensibility" of those who are duped. I've heard of cases where a person is being pressured to marry someone who has a serious disability. In this case, the individual is fully aware of the disability, so there's no question of duping. I've also heard of cases where there is pressure to rush a marriage so that one doesn't have time to figure things out about their spouse-to-be OR that one is not given the opportunity to get to know the candidate, etc. In such situations, it's the individual's responsibility to do get to know the other person and do a thorough investigation. "Duping" just sounds odd.
If you did manage to get duped, then you have the right to get a divorce. Staying in such a marriage is not healthy for either person. If you married the person while being fully aware that they're mentally handicapped, even then you have the right to get divorced, although it seems more "wrong" considering you willingly entered such a marriage.
Yup, it's NOT the person's fault that they have a mental disability.....but such reasoning can't be used to stay in a marriage where both partners are not on the same level mentally/emotionally. Choosing to get out of such a marriage DOES NOT mean that you are blaming the other person for being mentally handicapped. It simply means that you can't connect with in the various ways that would be conducive to establishing a stable marriage and that staying in such a relationship can be harmful for both parties. One's decision can also depend upon the severity of the mental handicap. And also, the dynamics would be different if one married a healthy spouse who later on became disabled in some way or the other.

a man that has OCD and that has all kinds of phobias and psychological challenges somebody like Mr. Monk, I would love to have a man like that, in the show he loved his dead wife to such an extreme and b/c of his mental disability his love for her was above and beyond any “normal” man b/c she was his better half and his strength to face the world.
although very childlike in the amount of care he needs but still love his character and he’s so cute

Okay maybe we should just call them 'special' :)
On the original topic, I have never once seen a real life example. I have however seen a case where the person got duped into marrying someone who I wouldn't say is mentally challenged (because she can be fine when she wants to be) but she's just plain old crazy.
Marriages like these only happen in Bollywood, where the ugly retarded Hrithik gets with Preity Zinta.
