Re: Would you marry a guy with a mental illness

marriage is the new phenomenon #1 issue] of the new millennium for girls/women...everyone of them wants a 100% PERFECT marriage and NOT knowing what that 'perfect' marriage means and it simply doesn't exist...compatibility scale is their guide!

Re: Would you marry a guy with a mental illness

By mental illness if you mean the guy is mentally unstable from the very start then I don't think the marriage is valid to begin with. That guy doesn't even know what marriage is, what wife is & whats her rights & duties are.

Re: Would you marry a guy with a mental illness

very good point.

Islamically, a marriage is NOT even valid between a sane and an insane [majnoon] individuals. the reason being, as mentioned by Samra, the marriage is a 'contract' and you can not sign on the dotted line if you don't understand what you are getting into and what your obligations are.

i think even the law of the land wouldn't allow this type of union.

Re: Would you marry a guy with a mental illness

but everything is possible on GS as girls would not take a nick of a second to discuss before thinking

I know this lady her bro got married to insane girl. Apparently she is law graduate but some how mentally insane. They said that girl had episodes of mental illness. ..sometimes shes normal otjer times she is not (not sure if 100%). She had 2 kids within 2 to 3 years after marriage and she was insane during pregnancies too. Everyone said she was her pregnancy caused her to be insane. Few years later husband re married and divorced her.

I asked them whether her nikah was valid…but they think it was…

.

Re: Would you marry a guy with a mental illness

I was not referring to insanity.

I was referring to a case that would be more acute than minor depression or minor anxiety and a more debilitating one such as ptst, ocd, bipolar depression and schrizophenia.

Re: Would you marry a guy with a mental illness

The last two I personally wouldn't (especially in an arranged situation).. those are very serious to me..

Depression, ptsd, ocd etc I could possibly handle if the guy was looking after himself and taking meds if needed..

Re: Would you marry a guy with a mental illness

No, we have had such a marriage in our family and the consequences have spanned generations. Everyone was in denial mode about the seriousness of the situation and that made things worse. There's a suspected suicide, a divorce, handicapped grandchildren, unmarried adults due to the stigma in the family. Allah khair karay. I have no idea how my aunt is handling the situation. I know I would not have the strength to.

Re: Would you marry a guy with a mental illness

Quite a few people have stated that it depends on what the condition is. The consensus seems to be that conditions like PTSD or anxiety would not be a problem, while schizophrenia or bipolar disorder would be deal breakers.

I would think that the following are equally important:
- Is the gentleman taking medication, going to therapy (often, medication alone isn't sufficient), and looking after himself? If so, the person can live a relatively normal life. However, unaddressed and untreated, even PTSD can be quite serious.
- Is his family aware of his condition and are they doing everything they can to support him? Support increases the likelihood that the person will be consistent, maintain their treatment, and recover or successfully manage their illness. If the family is in denial that the person has a condition and is generally unsupportive, that could pose a serious problem.

Re: Would you marry a guy with a mental illness

@Mez...true but why would someone knowingly marry someone with known mental issues. one shouldn't jeopardize married life because mental issues are serious issues.

one of my cousin's son is mentally challenged. he can not run his own affairs but can take care of himself. his parents somehow found a girl to marry their son who was orphaned and working in Delhi...

...after the wedding the wife asked for a divorce and she got it through the Shari'a court in India.

this guy was gone missing for 3 months then found with shear luck. last month he again disappeared and luckily someone from my family spotted him on the train traveling alone. he was brought back.

i think parents should NOT even try to get their sons/daughters married if they have mental issues. it's not fair with the other partner.
