The problem is that maybe they were with their now-ex for several years. That means that, obviously, in telling "stories" about their past experiences their ex is going to be involved in some of these stories. I think there's a difference in talking about your ex in a way that shows you still love them and in a casual manner. If you can talk about them casually it shows you really are over them and shows your now-partner that you have nothing to hide.
