I dont see any problems with having an event the same day. we talk about waste etc all the time, why not have the event one time so you dont have to spend money on the location the food and all.
do seperate small nikah ceremonies and a joint reception and the money you save, put it towards downpayment for a house or kids college fund.
bla bla .. my nikaah was on the day of my bros walima./ u get half of the attention.. :(
