… getting your photographs published somewhere? In a newspaper, for example?
I know a pakistani family who denied a magazine’s request to publish their daughter’s photograph in the magazine because she was involved in some youth programme in her school. They refused because of religious reasons.
What are your views on this as a parent and as an individual?
As a Man i'm not so shy about my pictures being made public... in fact i'm not too bothered about people taking pictures of myself, I'm not a model nor am i particulalrly good looking but sometimes I have to wear my own image on badges both at work and in public. However I would certainly mind if anyone had pictures of my dear ones... only I have rights to those pictures. :ASA:
That said theres actually been many times my picture has been taken by local and national media, mostly for good PR stunts, so all is good... I'm not on any wanted posters yet so i'm happy :)
So have mine, twice in school and once in college... but back then I didn't wear a hijab... now that I do wear one, do you think it would be hypocritical of me to allow my pictures to be published in newspapers etc? (not that I'm getting a bazillion requests for them :P )
But I don't cover my face and I'm walking around na-mehrams all day long so would it make any difference? As TLK bhai said, I do respect the family's decision but it would've been great for their daughter to get recognition for her achievements...

LOL The taliban are now involved in youth programs :p
in this day and age of digital mockeries that can be done with a simple photograph, its fair for a family to decide not to have their daughter's picture published somewhere.
On that account, I remember my sister got 8 A* and 3 As in her IGCSEs and the school published her photo in the newspaper and school magazine and she wore hijab. We were more than delighted because of her extremely good grades and achievement. Also sometimes these kinds of things help being published, it's not something that happens every day and also we forwarded that news about my sister to all the family in USA, Canada, UK and Pakistan and everyone was delighted to see my sister in the newspaper and see her extremely good result.
As for that reason that a picture can be misused well I don't know. It could be if it is a really farigh and pervery insan but there is a reason most photographs in the newspaper are passport sized and professional portraits.
i'll avoid it but really depends on the situation...like if i have some kind of achievement (jo kafi mushkil hai) and they want to publish my photo. yeah fine...well the final decision will be made by my ammi and abba huzoor what ever they feel is theek.
