Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

Keep in mind that non-existence of these things can have negative consequences for life, too.

  1. Pride is excessive belief in one’s own abilities, that interferes with the individual’s recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

  2. Envy is the desire for others’ traits, status, abilities, or situation.

  3. Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

  4. Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

  5. Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

  6. Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

  7. Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

The Seven Deadly Sins revealed

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

No

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

life with no #4? :bummer:

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

It would be a sad and boring life :(

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

The world will only consist of rocks and other inorganic stuff then. Even plants exhibit some of these behaviors.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

^^^ Maybe not all, but we can live w/o some like gluttony.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

All of these are sins and we do live happily without all of them ... the indulgence in any one of them leads to misery.

Ordinate bodily needs is not equivalent to lust ... but thinking about sex more than something like 3% of a day is approaching that lust limit.

And if you think carefully the 7 deadly sins are distractions from true success.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

^

Im way above the limit then.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

Accidents happen when people are above the limit

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

Where did you get the 3% fig and how would I know if I'm using more than 3% quota? :D

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

Peace Shamraz .... This is a philosophy thread ... My 3% is a limit that I have placed through introspection on what I believe to be a comfortable limit that allows our bodily needs to be kept oiled, but without allowing our hearts to become preoccupied with that condition - which is lust.

There is sexual need then there is sexual desire ... the amount of time we think about sex tends to correlate with whether we are indulged in it as a disease it overtakes us or merely responding to a need that goes away when that need is fulfilled or consciously disbanded.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

^^^ 1) I think not everyone's bodily needs are the same. So, what may be satisfying to you (in any of the 7 sins) may not be for anyone else 2) If you have no sexual needs than desire won't exist b/c they go together, but from what I understand (and I could be wrong) in Abrahamic religions sex only has 1 function & that is to procreate. So, desires/needs are really irrelevant.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

Peace Shamraz

none of the sins are acceptable ... Lust is not the same sexual attraction ... Lust is to dwell on sex and allowing the urge to take over ... I agree that different people have different levels of needs ... This is why I mentioned a percentage ...

The only acceptable condition is to subdue the desire to be subservient to the faculty of wisdom, this does not mean desire should be eliminated, the same applies for people who might be averse to sex and find it repulsive ... They too must engage in it (married couples) even if the urge does not come to them.

Notice all the sins are absolute and they are in no way acceptable lust is never acceptable ... neither is gluttony or sloth or envy or pride ... All of these are sins because they create imbalance and injustice. Lust is not = sexual attraction ... It is allowing sexual attraction to command our souls that is the sin which is called lust, not even a little bit of it is an acceptable condition.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

How did you come up with the 3℅ statistic

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

Well, the reality is that if these 7 sins did not exist than life would be meaningless. Take greed...if there was no greed what would be the incentives for us to work beyond our daily survival needs? There would be no need for innovation, discoveries and building civilizations b/c life will be fulfilling as it existed. Same goes for other things as well. Take for example gluttony or over-consumption. That helps create jobs & entire industries depend on it and millions of people are employed because of it.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

Perhaps they're not really sins

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

^ lets start a new religion where these are not sins but good deeds which would be rewarded hereafter. People would find excuses not to do these then and we will all have a better life.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

Reverse psychology…:hmmm: good idea

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

No you are mixing things up and getting yourself all confused.

Greed is an extreme position. Greed is always wrong - Let me explain this another way ...

1) Pride is the extremity of the axis of identification - we should aim to be honourable and dignified through humility before God and pleasantry towards others - Pride is an extreme form of self-worth or self-importance and is always problematic.

2) Envy is the extremity of the axis of competition - we should aim to be increasing ourselves in goodness and admire others in their successes to motivate ourselves - but those who do not wish to be motivated, do not want to put any effort in and still require the successes is always an extreme position. Not a slight bit of envy is healthy ... but competitiveness can be healthy.

3) Gluttony is the over-consumption of food - it is on the extremity of the scale of nutrition. Although it is virtuous to seek nutrition and pure foods - this is never called gluttony ... gluttony is when the imbalance of calorific value is present when our needs are not requiring of it ... even if it is a little over it is still gluttony and never a good thing. Eating less than our appetites and sufficient for normal operation is never called gluttony.

4) Lust is not the same as sexual need ... Lust is a run away affect of sexual thought processing even a little of it is harmful ... Sexual thoughts should be curbed and bridled, harnessed and controlled. Above the clue resides in the term "inordinate" - it means imbalanced.

5) Anger is the extremity on the scale of temperament ... Our temperament should remain calm - anger is never a good thing - passion can be either good or bad - but anger infers a loss of mental control - we must use our passions as impetus to act, but we must never allow them to take control of us subduing our intellects - that is anger.

6) Covetousness - is an extreme position on the scale of self-preservation. It puts too much emphasis on things and creates a false notion that they can provide goodness for the individual. Although it is virtuous to seek out things to meet our needs, it becomes a sin when this act eclipses our understanding that God provides for our needs and the things are mere vessels ... we start to hoard and accumulate beyond our needs and deprive others of taking benefit - even a little bit of this is harmful. We should be prepared to part with all of our wealth without any attachment to it if and when the need arises.

7) Sloth - This can never be a virtue ... It is the state of laziness. It is on the axis of action ... The acts of conformity are virtuous, the acts of struggle are better still, but to be sloth is to be totally disaffected for work of any kind and this can never be good. Even if a person is doing work and hates it inside this is a blameworthy state ... he should generate the passion and love for it in himself, but to conform to the sloth inside us is worse.

So really you are not talking about the sins ... you are talking about other things these sins lie on their axis/scale of ... these are extremes in their own axes and can in themselves never be virtuous.

Re: Would the life be diff if the 7 deadly sins did not exist?

Those who are overtaken by 'lust' usually don't have the opportunities to 'fulfill their need'.

I'm going by your distinction between lust and sexual need, which is hardly universal.
