Worst Baby Buys

So we have the favorites thread.
I wanna know what you bought and regretted buying for your baby.

Personally it’s probably all the random toys we got them, which they NEVER play with

Re: Worst Baby Buys

Stuff animals, my son is not a huge fan of them. Toddler cutlery… Completely useless for us. He eats better with our regular silverware.

Re: Worst Baby Buys

burp clothes- never needed them.
diaper rash cream (never worked on him…we made sure to keep him dry, we use a clean, dry towel to clean him after the wipes and he has had only one rash at almost 3.)
stuff animals
teething rings - LO chewed everything except that.
Potting training chairs - LO was way to big for those, even at 18 months when i first started him.

Re: Worst Baby Buys

I agree about the teething rings. EVERYTHING but those. Thankfully I didn’t buy many. Mine wasn’t interested in the gym for babies either!

One tip for all parents, show babies the toys at the shops before buying them. And don’t turn children into high demand babies, they really need/want very little. Give them plastic spoons and cups to play with instead of expensive blocks. More often than not they will want to play with empty boxes. This way you are stimulating their imagination rather than giving them ideas to work with. I bought LOTS of board books at book sales for less than 1$ USD each once I saw he was interested in those. Look for what your kid seems to enjoy and think about ways to nurture that

Re: Worst Baby Buys

I second stuffed animals and those awful plastic noise making toys that don’t actually do anything but one thing. Zero use of imagination involved. Bleh. And his LeapPad.
Receiving blankets were also useless and we had so many of them as gifts.
Teething rings also didn’t work.
Bottle feeding accessories like warmers, formula mixing jugs, sterilizers were also overrated and unnecessary.

The bottle warmer. It was a complete waste.

Re: Worst Baby Buys

*A whole assortment of sippy cups. There was nothing wrong with them but my daughter just never used them and I have tons of them.

*Her fisher price swing thingy.I bought this particular one because it seemed to be a space saver. When I put the baby in it,I realized the seat wasn’t too infant-friendly posturewise. It was too deep and the baby just seemed to be hunched over in it.

Fisher-Price SpaceSaver Swing & Seat - Ocean Wonders (Deep Sea Blue) | BabiesRUs

This was a total waste of money!

Re: Worst Baby Buys

carry-cots and other such seats. What a load of crap! I also bought a baby carrier - more of a stress giver rather than a stress reliever.

But I tell you guys what, for us, traveling around and living on the first floor (without a kitchen) bottle warmer came in handy. Recieving blankets also came in handy for us, since our baby was born during Oct/ Nov (Moderate temperature).

But all these things are a good investment (if at all) when youre planning to have at least half a dozen kids. We are not!

Re: Worst Baby Buys

i don’t know where you live but in the US/Canada etc a baby carrier/infant car seat is the most necessary item there is. It’s illegal to even get in a car without your baby properly buckled in and settled in an infant carrier/car seat. There is no other way to take your baby anywhere without a proper carrier/car seat

Re: Worst Baby Buys

Since we ended up co-sleeping, the crib was our most useless purchase ever. It got zero use until my son turned 4 years old and got his own big boy room…then the crib converted into a headboard and footboard for his full size bed

Re: Worst Baby Buys

Infant carseat…got as a gift…and my baby didnt feel comfortable in it
Crib…still cant understand why!!! I hope the second baby will use the crib :frowning:
Johnson’s shampoo…i used to clean my makeup brushes with them
Swaddling blankets…got tons of them.as gifts…but he didnt like to.be swaddled since birth…
Teethers…
Sippy cup…he started drinking water directly from regular cup
Pillows…

Every single crap of a toy manufactured under baby Einstein series. The toys are totally marketed to play with the parent’s psyche than with the baby’s intelligence.

Re: Worst Baby Buys

i second what khatti said- you must not be in the US/Canada/UK. they won’t let you leave the hospital without a car seat… but in any case, i’d be too paranoid to carry an infant in my lap whilst in the car

Re: Worst Baby Buys

No, I’m in Pakistan, but I was talking about something called carry cot. It’s not a car seat per se but it can turn into one with your own harnesses etc. stupid little thing.

Car seat is something I’m in much favour of. I don’t think one should do without it.

Re: Worst Baby Buys

That carrier is also what I’m talking about..it’s an infant carseat…it snaps into a base that is harnassed to the back seat of the car. The carrier also sits in the stroller, so it’s a complete travel system.

I don’t think it’s useless at all, so it guess it depends on individual usage.

Re: Worst Baby Buys

right on…

Re: Worst Baby Buys

^So when your baby was too young for a car seat, how did you travel with him/her in the car?

^ In mom’s lap I guess.

Car seats in Pakistan are hit and miss I guess. Most of the cars on the streets of Pakistan are very poorly designed from safety stand point. If God forbid another car comes and hit you, the body of the car is not designed to absorb much of energy to protect you from the crash. In such case, I think mom’s lap may be a safer place for the baby than a car seat.

Re: Worst Baby Buys

The infant carrier used in Pakistan is similar to a car seat but is much lighter and not a car seat at all.

Re: Worst Baby Buys

So far ;
mamas and papas snug and
mamas and papas swing (both a place to scream rather than give me few moments of peace)
Tommy tippee bottles (not that they have any problem, never got to use the ones we bought)
Tommy tippee manual pump (medela swing all the way)
Aveeno products (allergic)
Loads of fleecy polyester blankets, mostly were gifts.
Newborn socks (lived in onesies for first 3 months)
Newborn mittens (kept falling off, later realised onesies have built in mits)
Sleeping bags (hates it for some reason)
That’s all I think.
