Worship vs Prayer

What is the difference between the two?

Re: Worship vs Prayer

Is there really a difference? :s

Worship is maybe more formal?

Re: Worship vs Prayer

Merriam Webster explains it best:

Definition of PRAYER

1
*a: *an address (as a petition) to God or a god in word or thought
b: an earnest request or wish
2: the act or practice of praying to God or a god <kneeling in prayer>
3: a religious service consisting chiefly of prayers —often used in plural

Origin of PRAYER

Middle English, from Anglo-French priere, praiere, preiere, from Medieval Latin precaria, from Latin, feminine of precarius obtained by entreaty, from prec-, prex

Definition of WORSHIP
1**:** reverence offered a divine being or supernatural power; also : an act of expressing such reverence
2**:** a form of religious practice with its creed and ritual
3**:** extravagant respect or admiration for or devotion to an object of esteem

Origin of *WORSHIP
*
Middle English worshipe worthiness, respect, reverence paid to a divine being, from Old English weorthscipe worthiness, respect, from weorth worthy, worth + -scipe -ship.

So in a nutshell, to prayer is to entreat (usually a divine being) and to worship is to revere (again usually a divine being).

While an act of worship can be prayer, the terms cannot always be used interchangeably (although they sometimes do mean the same thing.)

Re: Worship vs Prayer

prayer is one form of worship.

Re: Worship vs Prayer

i'm listening to this poem/song where he says "ibadat kar ibadat karan naal gal bandi eh". i've been listening to it since yesterday trying to understand what it means. ibadat means worship. he's not asking us to pray but worship. i wondered what difference there was between worshipping and praying.

Re: Worship vs Prayer

Salam Alaikum,

Prayer is what you 'say'. Worship is what you 'do' as a whole. The message in the lyric could be that "Perform actions, actions achieve results". Like instead of just reading Quran that tells us over and over to be kind to others, to give to needy, to take care of orphans; and reciting Quran is great, Alhamdulillah. Acting on Quran is even better, and becomes worship.

and Allah knows best. That's just what I understood from what you said.

Re: Worship vs Prayer

Namaskaram.

When we chant mantras, we are praying. At the same time, we are worshipping a deity. Whether the deity be of Rama, Krishna or any other God.

The Gita teaches us to do our duty, and not worry about rewards.

Re: Worship vs Prayer

Exactly. Prayer (Namaz/ Salah/ Puja) is just one form of worship. Rememberance of Allah (Dikhr, Tasbeeh, chanting mantras, etc) is another form of worship, but as Teggy has put it so nicely, all other things of how we conduct of lives with the intention of following guidance given by Allah is worship.

Islam is a way of life, it is not compartmentalized for only one day of the week or certain times of the day.
