Asif Ali Zardari: life and style of Pakistan’s Mr 10 Per Cent - Telegraph

Asif Ali Zardari: life and style of Pakistan’s Mr 10 Per Cent

The president of Pakistan will always be known as “Mr 10 Per Cent” even to many of those who hail his wife, Benazir Bhutto, as a martyr and national hero.

**As an investment minister in his wife’s administration in the 1990s, Mr Zardari was accused by political rivals of taking personal commissions on government contracts.

**Pakistan’s state anti-corruption body claims he has amassed a property empire worth almost £1 billion, with a chateau in France, homes in Britain, Spain and Florida, and bank accounts in Switzerland.

**He has been accused of playing a role in the murder of his brother-in-law, Mir Murtaza Bhutto. He is also alleged to have arranged for a bomb to be tied to the leg of a businessman and sent him to withdraw money as a pay-off.
**
**He has always denied the allegations, which led to him spending eight years in prison, maintaining they were politically motivated. But they have endured under successive Pakistani administrations and continue to dog him even in the role of president.
**
Born in Karachi in 1955, the son of a wealthy Sindhi tribal leader, he married Mrs Bhutto, the daughter of the first elected prime minister of Pakistan, in 1987. His political ambitions were realised under his wife, who came to power as prime minister the following year.

But when she was deposed in 1990, Mr Zardari soon found himself at the centre of persistent corruption allegations surrounding property deals.
His first spell in prison followed shortly afterwards but on his release in 1993, Mrs Bhutto was back in power and immediately appointed him a minister in her government.

He returned to prison when his wife again lost power in 1996, this time for eight years, until he was bailed in 2004 while facing charges including corruption and conspiracy to murder. The charges were formally dropped as part of an amnesty brokered by Gen Pervez Musharraf, the former president, in 2007, but they continue to undermine him.

Following Mrs Bhutto’s assassination in December 2007, he was catapulted into the leadership of his wife’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), becoming president after a wave of sympathy carried it to power. But Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau, which led a successful court bid to have the amnesty overturned, has suggested he used the proceeds of corrupt deals on his property portfolio.

He is said to have interests in three properties in London, but it was his ownership of 335-acre Rockwood House in the North Downs in Surrey that came to symbolize his wealth and ambition.** He is said to have bought the £4  million mock Tudor pile partly because he had fallen in love with the local pub, the Dog and Pheasant. When the landlord refused to sell him the pub, he is said to have had a replica built in the basement of the house. The property also boasted polo pitches, a stud farm and a golf course. Faced with claims that he had bought the house with money made illegally, he denied he was even the owner, asking: “How can anyone think of buying a mansion in England when people in Pakistan don’t even have a roof over their heads?”

It was only after the house had been sold and the Pakistani authorities tried to seize some of the money that he acknowledged his ownership.**

Re: World's Richest Politicians...

westminster abbey ka kutta. This reminds me of multiple stories of millionaires leaving millions of dollars to their trusted dog and then people fighting who get to keep the dog in court.

Re: World's Richest Politicians...

Take 1: No, this is wrong, he doesn't have those billions, this is just establishment/takht-e-Lahore paying those institutions for propaganda.

Take 2: He hails from rich family, his wealth grew with time and has made it to the rich-people list.

Re: World's Richest Politicians...

He does not hail from a billionaire family. His father Hakim Ali Zardari was a small feudal lord and owned one/several cinema houses in Karachi. He married into Bhuttos so that was a big step up for him. So, at best his sources of income are unknown.

One does have to wonder about the source and authenticity of these claim though. His tax returns in Pakistan are certainly not the source of the claim that Zardari is a millionaire. You would think that a reputable news org like telegraph will verify the numbers before publishing a report. It could be propaganda but probably some truth is there to the claim.

Re: World's Richest Politicians...

"Net Worth: $1-$4 billion"

So his income is somewhere between one dollar and 4 billion dollars. Couldn't they have been little more precise? This is same old recycled story that as no facts. Simple fact is, no one knows about his wealth or any other politician's wealth including Shareef bros. So, why blame him only?

Re: World’s Richest Politicians…

lol, good point

My guess would be one dollar?:snooty:

Re: World's Richest Politicians...

Every Citizen of Pakistan is required to declare his true assets and the source of income to justify those assets. The accusations on Mr. Zardari are not solely based on speculations as you are suggesting.

  1. There was a list published by NAB a few years ago which showed the existence of bank accounts in Switzerland worth US$ 1.8 billion where the actual ownership was suspected to be Mr. Zardari. Based on these suspicions Swiss authorities froze these bank accounts on the request of then Pakistani government. After NRO all these bank accounts were unfrozen and case was no longer persuaded by the Pakistan government because of the deal which was stuck between then President Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto. Who had given the mandate to Mr. Musharraf not to persuade these cases to bring back the suspected stolen money from the Swiss accounts.

  2. There exists another account of US$ 60 million where Swiss Companies SGS/Cotecna have already admitted in a Swiss court of law that they have paid commissions to the BB/Zardari. These companies have already been convicted in Swiss court for these crimes. The account was already frozen and verdict of indictment was already announced by the Swiss courts in favor of Pakistan government. Suddenly Pakistan government decided not to persuade the case due to NRO which has been declared void ab-inition by Pakistan's supreme court. This account was also unfrozen.

  3. Mr. Zardari and Benazir Bhutto had denied for years the ownership of a property in Surrey UK worth millions of pounds which was never declared in their wealth statements submitted in Pakistan. When the property was sold a few years ago this couple claimed the sale proceeds through a British court of law. All this is well documented and is on record. Mr. Zardari has never bothered to show the source of income to buy this property in the first place.

  4. Mr. Zardai and family live in a house in Dubai Emirate Hills which is worth at least US $20 million. The wealth and income tax record in Pakistan does not show their income which could justify the purchase of such an expensive property.

  5. There are several known properties of Mr. Zardari and family all across the globe including a Chateau in France. There is no known source of income to justify the possession of assets worth this huge amounts.

All these are facts and yet you call them allegations/speculations. Just consider in USA if these so called speculations/allegations would have surfaced against President Obama.. what kind of hue and cry would have occurred. Yet when we Pakistanis demand a fair and impartial enquiry in to these known facts.. you call them speculations.. Morally no one should occupy the highest position in Pakistan without clearing his name first. How can you expect a common man to pay taxes if the President is in possession of all these assets and does not reveal his source of income. And when people demand him to declare the source of income he simply tries to hide behind his Presidential immunity clause for his personal alleged criminality. I just want to ask you a simple question:

If in USA President Obama tried to use Presidential Immunity to conceal this sort of alleged crimes, what would have been the reaction of the public?

Re: World's Richest Politicians...

^ Yazdi bhai... everyone in Pakistan is corrupt. Therefore PPP leaders are supposed to be more corrupt because they represent the biggest party in Pakistan. Now, the chairman of the biggest party SHOULD be the most corrupt in the country, otherwise we cannot call him the representative of the people of Pakistan.
