World XI v Aussies 2nd ODI / Afridi, McGrath out

Afridi replaced by Gayle…

with all due respect to Gayle, they could’ve certainly used afridi bowling as well…

i wonder why they did not replace lara or dravid or one of the other batsmen who didn’t do much with the bat :stuck_out_tongue:

Glenn McGrath, the Australian fast bowler, will miss the second match of the ICC Super Series in Melbourne on October 7. Chris Gayle, the West Indies opener, has replaced Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan allrounder, in the 12-man World XI team, in a game which they have to win to stay alive in the three-match series.

McGrath has been rested because he experienced tightness in the legs at the end of the first game after taking 2 for 13 in seven overs. He will be replaced by Stuart Clark, the New South Wales fast bowler, who will be making his debut as the 153rd player to represent Australia.

Afridi was the Supersub in the first match and replaced Muttiah Muralitharan at the end of the first innings. He didn’t get a chance to bowl and managed only 2 with the bat before attempting a mighty hoick across the line and falling lbw.

Australia
1 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Damien Martyn, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Andrew Symonds, 7 Michael Hussey, 8 Shane Watson, 9 Cameron White, 10 Brett Lee, 11 Nathan Bracken, 12 Stuart Clark

World XI
1 Chris Gayle, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Brian Lara, 6 Rahul Dravid, 7 Kevin Pietersen, 8 Andrew Flintoff, 9 Shaun Pollock (capt), 10 Daniel Vettori, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan, 12 Shoaib Akhtar

Re: Mcgrath & Afridi Out Of Second ODI

They should've actually dropped Sehwag and brought in Gayle, but then Gavaskar won't be happy.

Re: Mcgrath & Afridi Out Of Second ODI

Well, Afridi didn't help his own cause but he was the easiest to replace and hence he was made a scapegoat. I don't understand why Sehwag is persisted with when his overall average is $hit, his recent form is crap to say the least, his overall performance against Aussies is PATHETIC and more importantly his performance in this match was shameful since he had just been dropped in previous over.

Afridi on the other hand came when the RRR was around 7 and he could hardly make any difference and his LBW decision was a bit dodgy as well. Gayle should have replaced Sehwag bcoz it's hardly a good decision to play Gayle at number 6 or 7.

Re: Mcgrath & Afridi Out Of Second ODI

wht the hell??...afridi is such a talented guy... hell to "old is hole" gavaskar...

Re: Mcgrath & Afridi Out Of Second ODI

During the first match, commentators were constantly pointing out the need for a specialist fielder for instance at point. Most of the ROW players are specialist batsmen or bowlers but Afridi in this squad is a genuine allrounder who can bat, bowl and field and his recent ODI record against Aussies has been outstanding.
Sehwag obviously won't be perfoming again in the 2nd ODI and Afridi should be back in the squad for the final ODI.
Gavaskar's selection policy has been extremely pathetic uptill now and the way he has been, I am afraid he won't be picking up inzi for the test.

Re: Mcgrath & Afridi Out Of Second ODI

Isn’t looking good for the Pakistan players innit
**First the crap with Inzi bachra lol:blush: **
Shoib not getting any wickets but still didn’t give to amny runs so thats good
and then Afridi 2 runs isn’t good at all but the playerz like Lara,Dravid andSehwag didn’t do any better so can blame the guy really.
so Inshallah Akhtar will show them how it’s done next match:D

Re: Mcgrath & Afridi Out Of Second ODI

Well Afridi was a super sub and was primamrily used as a batsman in the last game.

When you have bowlers like Shoaib, Pollock, Vettori, Murali, and Flintoff, there is hardly any requirement for another part time bowler in an ODI.

Re: Mcgrath & Afridi Out Of Second ODI

It was always on the cards with two morons Pollock and Gavaskar at the helm. Add Wright to the mix and you have a perfect combo of idiocy and dumbness. Afridi was always going to be a better bet than Sehwag considering his performance recently but oh well.

Re: Mcgrath & Afridi Out Of Second ODI

How can Gavaskar prefer Shahid over Sehwag?

Re: Mcgrath & Afridi Out Of Second ODI

Are you another Akhtar bandwagonner? :stuck_out_tongue:

I hope all will do better.

Re: World XI v Aussies 2nd ODI / Afridi, McGrath out

First game was dominated by Aus and Vetori. Sangakara showed some fight as well.

Second match is a must-win for World XI, as it is a 3-match series. If they don't win this game, then third match is just for schedule. Gayle is in for this reason, I guess.

Almost all star batsmen failed to deliver and Afridi is out (as expected from Gavaskar). If he had dropped Sehwag, then he must have found himself (as villan) in headlines of Indian newspapers and ESPN (India)

Afridi came in when World XI were already out of the game, but he started (trying) hitting as usual, and it was not very diificult to guess that he was going back very soon after he hit the first ball. Afridi don't need any other reason then himself to be out of the squad. This time it was probably his hitting attitude (at a stage when a partnership was required, even if team has already lost, and Afridi was the last batting option available), but then that is why he was selected.

I am not saying that Pollock is the best option for Captain, but his attitude with players was very friendly. He backed his bowlers after every delivery. Almost all players were at their ease while negotiating with him. This is the thing required the most from a person leading a team of best players.

Re: World XI v Aussies 2nd ODI / Afridi, McGrath out

What a poor decision. I mean dravid and Kallis can barely hit the ball off the ground let alone play in a one dayer. Sehwag is shocking and i would make afridi open for the rest of the one day series. But gavaskar the old Indian fart must be racist against the Pakistanis.

Guys there is a way we can get afridi to play and that is to constantly complain to channel nine in Australia for the rest of the day and he will play..

Re: World XI v Aussies 2nd ODI / Afridi, McGrath out

What time does the match start EST?

Re: World XI v Aussies 2nd ODI / Afridi, McGrath out

It's totally their loss. God help them with the snail pace other players play.

Re: World XI v Aussies 2nd ODI / Afridi, McGrath out

Bad decision, this. Dravid needed to go, his recent form hasn't been great and his overall career strike rate is nothing short of pathetic. With Afridi out, it is going to make it difficult for ROW to chase down a mammoth total or even be able to post a big one. Sehwag should stay. I can understand why Gavaskar would have preferred him but Dravid even being in the ODI squad is ridiculous. He's a test match player and a shoo-in for any world XI test team but by no means for the ODI team.

Australia is batting first.

Gayle is new super sub.
Akhtar to bowl to Gilly :)

Re: World XI v Aussies 2nd ODI / Afridi, McGrath out

First ball was an EXCELLNT QUICK bouncer to Gilly and opened his eyes.
Second ball: Another beautiful delivery and almost got Gilly LBW.
Third: WOW!!!Almost got Gilly, just dropped short of Dravid at point.
Fourth:Gilly relieved to take a single to avpid further damage.
Fifth: Katich being hit ONCE again by a SHARP bouncer.
Sixth ball: DOT ball

Excellent over by Akhtar, his best for a long long time.
