World turning its back on Brand America

By Kevin Allison

The US is increasingly viewed as a “culture-free zone” inhabited by arrogant and unfriendly people, according to study of 25 countries’ brand reputations.

The findings, published online today, will add to concerns that anti-Americanism is hurting companies whose products are considered to be distinctly “American”.

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

who cares if they buy american goods as long as thier govts keep buying our planes, arms especially junk we dont want to use anymore.

im more worried about the fact that half the world we cant travel cuz we are afraid someone's going to bust a cap in our as(s). Granted the other half doesnt want to buy our goods right now... but, if republicans win another term... they will want to unload their magazines in our behind too.

Interesting, however it appears that the author lied where he says “That the world takes a dim view of the US people will surprise most Americans themselves: the study’s American respondents consistently placed the US at the top of all six categories polled.”

Here’s the press release from the company that conducted the survey:

which clearly states that “Consumers were not asked questions about their own country.”

United States – On investment and quality of products, the U.S. still scores high marks in global opinion (third and second respectively); however, the poll ranks German branded products above American ones – a surprise, considering American brands hugely outnumber German brands. When the international panel was asked how much they trust a country’s government to make responsible decisions on peace and security, the U.S. came 19th just above South Korea, China, and Russia, but below all other Western nations.

"Nation brand is an important concept in today’s world. A powerful and positive nation brand provides a crucial competitive advantage in today’s global marketplace, where countries compete with each other for the attention, respect and trust of investors, tourists, consumers, donors, immigrants, the governments of other nations and the media."

Note the bold. The fact is that it is not limited to Germans in Germany. It is limited consumers in Germany. That includes the french, italians and yes could easily include americans.

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

news flash an immigrant in Germany is not a German. It clearly says that people are not asked question about their own country.

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

you'd probably have to read the full PDF report which describes the "study's methodologies" to learn whether the reporter got that fact wrong

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

it clearly says "Consumers in the following countries were polled about their opinions: Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom and United States. Representative samples of 1,000 consumers (3% margin of error) were collected in each country for a total of 10,000 consumers surveyed. Consumers were not asked questions about their own country. "

So, Americans were not asked questions about American brands.

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

ok, have it your way Einstein, take the easy way out

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

Wow, Visa applications to the US are way down too! No wait, they're not.

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

consumers were not asked about their own countries according to the PDF report.

America was determined to be a " “culture-free zone” inhabited by arrogant and unfriendly people" based on what looks to be 2 questions. An interesting report though, I like the idea.

Turn the oil taps off they would soon stop smiling then!

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

Now I know why the tourists line up outside GAP, Tommy Hilfiger, Polo etc stores while visiting U.S. They also like to visit Macys, Bloomingdale, Saks Fifth, Brooks Brothers, Lord Taylor etc.
Granted all the stores mentioned above use cheap labor from yellow and brown skins to manufacture their wares, however its the label that counts.
God Bless Capitalism, Old Glory and the blessed United States of America.

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

That's why Europeans are moving to China....

Re: World turning its back on Brand America

I have not read the report but one country on the top of the list whose people really dislike Americans is the United Kingdom. UK is followed by France. It may not be true, but it is my general observation through interaction with different nationalities.
