I’ll start with the one I just read on cricinfo.
Re: World records that are not commonly known
I bet the lowest batting average in both Test cricket and First Class cricket belongs to B.S. Chandrasekhar (deliberately have not googled this - curious to know if this is indeed true.
Re: World records that are not commonly known
Probably the oldest record in Test cricket is Sir Donald Bradman's test batting average ~ 99.xx.
What is the second longest record in First class cricket?
My guess - Hanif Mohammed's highest score (was it 465?) circa 1955?
Again, have not googled this - so for all I know the 465 run record may have been broken?
Re: World records that are not commonly known
Highest last wicket partnership in test cricket
Asif iqbal and last man (name?) against Australia ~ 1975. Asiq iqbal scored ~ 165+ and probably added ~ 125 for last wicket. If I recall, the other batsman faced less than 10 balls. Dont know if Pakistan was able to save that match (I hope so, would not like to see such an inning go to waste).
A second record that may have come out of this - least number of deliveries (or percent of deliveries) faced by one partner in a 100+ partnership.
OK - I checked. This was not a record. Iqbal Qasim was the other batsman, they put on 87 runs. But I bet the least % of deliveries faced by Qasim for say > 80 runs partnership is still an unoffcial record. Funny how as time passes, one tends to exaggerate distant memories. I could have swore they put on ~ 125 runs! In my book, it is still a record.
Re: World records that are not commonly known
Wow Amazing Records ![]()
Lara scored 501 not out in FC so he got the record not hanif
Re: World records that are not commonly known
Thanks!
Kind of missed out on cricket from ~ 1982-2002, and getting back in. Come to think of it, I think Hanif may have scored 495 (not 465). So Lara barely made it! From what I have heard, Lara is a gentleman cricketeer, so I am happy for him (but not too excited Hanif lost the record).
Re: World records that are not commonly known
Never saw Hanif played ....but Lara man he was by far one of the greatest left handers to be playing the game of cricket
its not easy to lose ur world record and then regain it again ie
400*
Re: World records that are not commonly known
Just checked. Hanif was run out at 499 in 1958 or 1959. So a close 2nd in all time highest 1st class cricket. PS - I too did not see Hanif play (not that old, but old enough to watch Mushtaq and Sadiq, his younger siblings)
Brian Lara - I did not realize he has 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 in 1st class cricket - the only one to do so. Pity missed out on him.
Vivian Richards was the most feared and respected batsman from ~ 1973-1980. Wonder if Brian Lara struck as much fear in the opponents as the one and only Richards did. Asking out of ignorance (and almost disbelief anyone could be better than Richards - he was that good).
Re: World records that are not commonly known
Yeah Viv Richards was and always will be the most feared batsman ever :)
But Lara got class of his own like Tendulkar :)
Re: World records that are not commonly known
Bradman has most Double hundreds in test matches "12" and he only played 52 matches. Closest to him is lara with "9" double hundreds but he played 131 matches.
From Current Players its Sangakkara who has "7" double hundreds in 94 matches which is pretty Impressive, Tendulkar, Sehwag and Jayawerdane all have 6 double hundreds but Sehwag only played 84 matches.
Re: World records that are not commonly known
Viv Richards has record of Scoring fastest hundred in TEST MATCHES "facing only 56 deliveries" closest to him is Adam Gilchrist who scored 100 in 57 deliveries.

Great :D
Re: World records that are not commonly known
An interesting record belongs to Javed Miandad: the only batsman in the world who was able to maintain a test batting average of above 50 from his first inning throughout his entire test career, and that too against the high calibre bowling of 70s and 80s. Call me a fool, but i bet he can STILL join and bat better than half of our existing team at his tender age of 53!
Re: World records that are not commonly known
I used to "hate" Miandad, because he was so good. I vaguely recall one match when he won the game by hitting a six off the last ball against India. Don't recall if it was 1-day or Test. He had great defence, good running between the wickets, could counter-attack at will.
While lots of batsmen could pad up their statistics, Miandad always appeared to score runs when needed and was a thorn in our side.
