Love goes into drains

I wonder why one day
all lovers go their ways.
They win our hearts.
We lose our bodies.

And thus

Love goes into drains.
Why love has strange ways?
Why do lovers go their ways
when love is God itself?

Mein Sochti hoon Janne Kyon…
Saare Deewane Pyaar Ke…
Ik Din Juda Hojate Hain…
Dil Jeet Ke Jaan Haar Ke…
Barbad Hotee Preet Hai…
Duniya Kee Kyon Yeh Reet Hai…
Jab IshQ Khud Hi Hai Khuda…
Hote Hain Kyon Do Dil Juda. ..

The warmth of my love

When everything about you
is falling apart, and
you’re going bananas,
I’ll be there with you

When everyone turns against you
trying hard to disgrace you,
I’ll feel the pain in your heart
and will be there to support you

My love, you’re my heart
Let me love you
Let me give myself to you
Let me give you the
warmth of my love.

but he isn’t in love everyone knows

he came back as if he’s so busy
but he isn’t in love everyone knows

it seems he has lost all desires now
he has for long no qualms against me

he feels all desolate in love now
he won’t pour out his feelings now

everything though is under his control
to be free in love is not his nature still

Kaise woh lot aye ke fursat usse nahin
duniya samajh rahi hai mohabbat usse nahin.

lagta hai aa chuki hai kami us ki chah main
kafi dinon se mujh se shikayet usse nahin.

dil ki zameen us ki hai banjar issi liye

listen, why don’t you come back?

listen, why don’t you come back?
see, the the moon is up
the stars are shining
I’m praying for you
waiting for you
thinking of you
searching for you
hoping you come back

when my heart quickens
it calls for you
when my tears flow
they show my sadness
missing you
whenever it rains
I think of you
whatever little happiness
I have is half-filled without you
listen, why don’t you come back?
why don’t you come back?

I cannot forget your love

“I cannot forget you.
I cannot forget your love.”
Why people go on telling
lies after lies?

When you find a new women
who wants you and
talks sweet things to you
to entrap you

Or when you meet a blond
whose eyes are blue
whose skin is white as
milk or is like sunlight,
all your lies then prove to be true -

You sing the same old love
song to your new girl friend:
“I cannot forget you.
I cannot forget your love.”

Now I’ve nothing if I don’t have my lover

How hard it was to pass the last night, don’t ask
Things of my heart that I couldn’t tell, don’t ask

For whom I would fight against the world
Who do I love more than myself, don’t ask

The way he walked by me a moment ago
How did I not let go my feelings, don’t ask

Man changes when things change around him
What do the bad times not bring, don’t ask

Some other woman now owns him, I didn’t know
How did he break up with me, don’t ask

In a moment he turned me into a stranger
How did he let me down, don’t ask

Now I’ve nothing if I don’t have my lover
How hard it was to find his love, don’t ask

I’m in rapture, I’m not helpless

Darling
I’m in rapture, I’m not helpless
I told you earlier
My love is real

If you want to return to
those dwellings you like,
you’ll without me
find no life there

What parable is here
you ask yourself
for love-fires of ardent
lovers are still rising in flames

These are the roads of faithfuls
they’re on a long journey
see it for yourself
the roads don’t bend back

just for nothing
you’re holding yourself in darkness
not a ray of sun has
yet entered the garden

That Man (Ubaidullah Aleem)

Said he was a rose and pricked me, that man
Said he was a lamp and burned down my home, that man

All my dreams and feelings were like fiction,
He turned them all into real fiction, that man

His love was strange, so was his hate
He was like me, he got into me, that man

In love I had forgotten all about him
With fresh wounds I recalled him, that man

The secret - world’s an illusion - was finally revealed
But he had already made a fool of me, that man

I heard a shrill cry at my door
I heard it knocking at my door

O my life of life, love is blind
It came running through a blind alley

My wounds oozed all day
And brought this poem at night

The sun rose above the trees
But spread shadows in my yard

Love isn’t at at its zenith yet
It’s facing many ‘ifs’, still.

Re: World Poetry in Translation - Mostly Urdu

Asma Farhan, 'being lonely' - thanks to both of you.

Moderators - Could you please see the posters at Intikhaab give credit to the original poets by acknowledging them - at least mentioning their names in the footnotes when they copy and post their original poems. I am in the process of translating much of the Urdu poetry posted here and often do not know the source of poems. If the posters do not know who wrote the original nazams/ghazals, they can point out as source unknown or anonymous etc.

Thanks.

Your letters, your fragrance
Your dreams, your thoughts

Once it’s in the open,
it’ll spread like wild fire.
they will unwittingly ask
the cause of your grief.
they will ask
why you look so worried.
they will point fingers to your
disheveled hair.
and count the years slipped by you.
they will laugh at your bangles
and seeing your wavering hands,
they’ll make fun of you.
people are cruel
and pass wisecracks at everything.
they will bring me in their speech.

they’ll know all by your mien.
never question them, no matter what.
never tell them a thing about me.

Lovers once lived here -
the sun and the moon.
The sun was somewhat crazy.
The moon somewhat edgy.
They wandered around the dwellings.
They laughed together, always.

Then one day they broke up
And all dreams went away.
Now the moon rises
When the sun is waning.
The clouds tell the mornings:
The sun is showing anxiety.
The moon has the stars
But the sun is always lonely.

Kuch suraj mun ka pagal tha,
Kuch chand bhi shokh chanchal tha,
Basti basti phirtay thay,
Her pal hanstay rehtay thay,
Phir ik din dono rooth gaey,
Or saaray supnay toot gaey,
Ab chand bhi us waqt aata hai,

Relationships

How strange are our bonds!
Made for happiness
they often end up in grief.

They are the balance
and keep us in check
in their pans.

We break our bonds
and often
are tied back again.

Till now I didn’t know
the touchstone of relationships -
Man loses himself finding it
and yet,
it’s in the relationships itself.

With it feathers cut,

Now I can’t even have

I couldn’t save them

Seeing a smiling flower,
my eyes became tearful.
What’s happening to me,
now I know.

Years have gone by
but I remember him still.
How am I tied to him,
now I know.

The thirsty suffer all life
wandering in deserts.
What a patch of cloud is to them,
now I know.

The Poet

The poet doesn’t sell himself for fame
Nor does he aim for wealth

He moves through emotional meetings
Hoping to meet someone with intellect

He offers his life for what’s right
And awekens the sleeping emotions

Aloofness is one of his other names
It’s hard for this gem of nature to live

His thoughts are lost emotions of man
His craze is to see light in the dark

The world does not see his flights
In the current river lies his future boat

Let man show humanity, submits the poet
Should man embraces love, his sins will be forgiven

Shaayar

Shohrat ka nahi saudai shaayar
Daulat bhi nahi iska nishaanaa
Bus bhatkay hai dil dil ki mehfil
k mil jayay koi chehra-e-daanaa

Umr apni tehzeeb ko day jaataa hai shaayar
JazboN ko neeNd say jagaa laataa hai shaayar

Safar-e-shayar kaho ya naam laylo tanhai ka
k itna dushwaar hai jeena laal-e-khudai ka

Afkaar iskay aadmi kay bhoolay huay ahsaas
JunooN iska mehw-e-neeNd main say jaagoN ki talaash

Nahi pehchaany parwaazaiN iski daur-e-zamaanaa iska
Dariya-e-haazir main hai shayar ik safinaa-e-fardaa

Tasleem-e-shaayar hai gar aadmiyat ko pa jay aadmi
Muaaf gunaah sub hoNgay gar muhabbat ko pa jay aadmi.

From each strand of her hair
will hang a serpent,
her eyes that please hearts
will be pierced,
on hot burning coals
will her tender body be placed
for the sins she has committed.
What mercy later!

Though Allah is the rightful
master of every heart,
her body and soul she has
given to someone forbidden.
She’s loves someone who
is forbidden.

Would you like to meet again
the same way at the same place
with the same taste
in the same moments of happiness,
in the same doubtful veins,
that we cherish our friendship
and jealousy shows distress,
that I tell stories to someone and
to someone you tell your stories
but
these stories have a story
of our own?
Would you like to meet again
the same way at the same place?

kabhie milen phir?

wohi bad-gumaniyon ke bhanwar
wohi madd-o-juzer rafaqaton ke
wohi azaab raqabaton ke

kabhi milein phir ussi tarha, usi jagah?

You complain of my indifference.
But my dear darling!
did you ever think
whenever I raise my eyes towards you
to fully see you,
why under my pale golden skin
so many little lamps
suddenly are lit?

If you did not look this way
with your drunken eyes at me,
I wouldn't have gotten so drunk

I've desires to always see you
but I wouldn't have dared to look at you

don't mind if I go ahead and touch your skirt,
this unpleasant thing knowingly I'd never do.

I'm in my senses before you come,
but after that what happens
I never can tell.

It’s a dream.
A dream you don’t want to lose
though you know it won’t true.

He’s wound around your heart
like a hidden secret,
he’ll never be yours,
so it seems.

Strange are the ways of love -
he doesn’t love you,
and still, him
you don’t want to lose.

You’re in such a mess
only because of him,
but he’ll not shed a tear
when you lie under the ground.

wo shaqs ke jisko mera hona bhi nahi hae

Rang hai Dil ka Mire ( A Poem of Faiz Ahmad Faiz in Six Different English Translations)

It’s the Color of My Heart

When you didn’t come,
things were they should be -
the sky was as far as I could see,
the road to travel by was a road,
the goblet was a glassful of wine.

And now, a glassful of wine,
the road to travel by,
and the color of the sky,
are like the colors of my blood,
flowing from my heart to my liver.

Sometimes golden, like the
shine of your eyes when we meet.
Sometimes grey and saddening like
the sickening feelings of partings.

Other times like colors of old
leaves, of trash, of dry grass,
of red flowers in flower-beds,
of dark sky, of poison, of blood.

Now I see the sky, the road,
the glass full of wine, my wet
robe, my aching nerves in a mirror,
changing moment by moment.

Since you’ve come, please stay.
May the things - the colors, the seasons,
stay as if they were in one place.
May everything be as it used to be -

The sky, as far as I could see,
the road to travel by, a road,
the goblet, brimming with wine.

(A) Before You Came (tr. by Victor Kiernan)

Before you came, all things were what they are—
The sky sight’s boundary, the road a road,
The glass of wine a glass of wine; since then,
Road, wineglass, colour of heaven, all have taken
The hues of this heart ready to melt into blood—
Now golden, as the solace of meeting is,
Now grey, the livery of despondent hours,
Or tint of yellowed leaves, of garden trash,
Or scarlet petal, a flowerbed all ablaze:
Colour of poison, colour of blood, or shade
Of sable night. Sky, highroad, glass of wine—
The first a tear-stained robe, the next a nerve
Aching, the last a mirror momently altering…
Now you have come, stay here, and let some colour,
Some month, some anything, keep its own place,
And all things once again be their own selves,
The sky sight’s bound, the road a road, wine wine.

(B) Before You Came (tr. by Naomi Lazard)

Before you came things were just what they were:
the road precisely a road, the horizon fixed,
the limit of what could be seen,
a glass of wine was no more than a glass of wine.

With you the world took on the spectrum
radiating from my heart: your eyes gold
as they open to me, slate the color
that falls each time I lost all hope.

With your advent roses burst into flame:
you were the artist of dried-up leaves, sorceress
who flicked her wrist to change dust into soot.
You lacquered the night black.

As for the sky, the road, the cup of wine:
one was my tear-drenched shirt,
the other an aching nerve,
the third a mirror that never reflected the same thing.

Now you are here again—stay with me.
This time things will fall into place;
the road can be the road,
the sky nothing but sky;
the glass of wine, as it should be, the glass of wine.

(C) Before You Came (tr. by Agha Shahid Ali)

Before you came,
things were as they should be:
the sky was the dead-end of sight,
the road was just a road, wine merely wine.

Now everything is like my heart,
a color at the edge of blood:
the grey of your absence, the color of poison, or thorns,
the gold when we meet, the season ablaze,
the yellow of autumn, the red of flowers, of flames,
and the black when you cover the earth
with the coal of dead fires.

And the sky, the road, the glass of wine?
The sky is a shirt wet with tears,
the road a vein about to break,
and the glass of wine a mirror in which
the sky, the road, the world keep changing.

Don’t leave now that you’re here—
Stay. So the world may become like itself again:
so the sky may be the sky,
the road a road,
and the glass of wine not a mirror, just a glass of wine.

(D) The Colour of the Moment (tr. by Shiv K. Kumar)

Before you came, everything was what it is—
the sky, vision-bound
the pathway, the wine-glass.
And now the wine-glass, the pathway, the sky’s tint—
everything bears the colour of my heart
till all melts into blood.
Sometimes the golden tinge, sometimes the hue of the joy of
seeing you,
sometimes ashen, the shade of the dreary moment—
the colour of yellow leaves, of thorn and trash,
of the crimson petals of the flower-beds aglow,
the tint of poison, of blood, of sable night.
The sky, the pathway, the wine-glass—
some tear-stained robe, some wincing nerve,
some ever-revolving mirror.

Now that you’re here, stay onso that so
me colour, some season, some object.

(E) It’s the Color of My Heart (tr. by Frances W. Pritchett)

Before you came everything
was what it is:
the sky the limit of sight
the road a road, the glass of wine
a glass of wine.

And now the glass of wine, the road, the color of the sky
are the color of my heart
while it breaks itself down
into blood.
Sometimes a gold color—a color of eyes’ delight
that sooty color, the color of disgus
tthe color of dry leaves, straw, thorns
the color of red flowers in a blazing garden
poison color, blood color, the color of black night.
The sky, the road, the glass of wine
are a sodden cloak, an aching vein,
a mirror changing every moment.

Now that you’ve come, stay—let some color, season, thing
stay in place.
One more time let everything
be what it is:
the sky the limit of sight
the road a road, the glass of wine
a glass of wine.

'Husn, Ghamzay ki kashaakash se chhuTa mere ba'ad' -Ghalib

Beauty's playfulness was lost after my death
The cruel ones are now at rest after my death

No one could be the king of love after my death
All manners of love were lost after my death

A candle ends up giving off smoke
The flame of love wore black after my death

In my grave I take pity on them. Their nails they now
paint with henna, not my blood, after after my death

Beauty leaves those without heart
Their eyes gave up kohl after my death

Frenzy of love will bid farewell to lovers
They'll tear off their dresses after my death

"Who will rival him losing himself in the wine of love?"
Asks the wine server again and again after my death

I'm dying with this grief in my heart -
No one will mourn the death of love after my death

I cry over the helplessness of lovers, Ghalib
Where would the flood of grief go after my death?
