American commentators are still crying over the penalty. I, personally, thought it was atrocious as well. There was no foul there, as both players had jumped to head the ball and there was no deliberate contact.
I also agree that there are far too many yellow cards in this WC. FIFA needs to realize that this is a game, and all players are trying to win games for their countries.
as a player who was seriously injured playing varsity and sitting out a season, and as a league player getting an njury that ended my competitive playing days, I have to say that there is a balance needed, you have to make the game interesting, you have to let players try to win, but you have to protect the other players too, you let fouls go unchecked, they become the norm, and then for one victory or a little more viewing excitement, careers of players end because of bad tackles or rough checks.
Mr F, i understand where you are coming from. The game is physical and one such physical play can ruin a prospective carreer.
But you and I both saw Portugal vs. Holland game, where a record was set. 4 red cards and 9 yellow cards were given by that refree to Portugal (which sets a record for the most given to any team).
Something was not right. The refree was inconsistent and went trigger happy with those cards. In my opinion, refree shouldnt factor in the outcome of the game in progress or future games. As you know 2 of Portugal's player are now suspended because of that for the game vs. England. Im not saying it will directly impact the outcome of that game but it can.
And now:
FIFA president Sepp Blatter criticized Ivanov's handling in a frank assessment to a Portuguese TV station.
"I think there could have been a yellow card for the referee," Blatter said.
I am generally disappointed by the aggression Refs have shown in this tournament.
But yesterday's semi final was handled absolutely superbly. There were no needless free kicks, ridiculous yellow cards and as a result we got to see brilliant, free flowing football from both teams; a great advertisement for the worldcup.
^ whatever is the case, he was just superb. Never stopped the play for needless fouls, and played some blinder advantages for both germans and Italians

I agree, yesterdays game was refereed superbly, they let them play aggressive and it didn't go overboard, hope that squad does the final.
