woah..talk about the total collapse! Iran was hanging tough with Mexico , all it takes is one mistake. I thought Iran had more speedy and skilled players but they lacked in pass handling, execution and more importanty depth. btw the iranian goaleee sucks big time. He seems little heavy for a goalee.
Anyways well played Mexico. I'm not sure if they played like a 4th ranked team.
Iranian midfielders did appear more skilled but the defending was pathetic, i mean look at the last 2 goals 6 defenders in the penalty area and yet all just standing in line and leaving Bravo anf Zinha unmarked.
Iran deserved to Loose in 2nd half. I was supporting them but 2nd half it was just Mehico all the way, ever time I would flip channel to soccer I would c Mexico in Irans half and tryin to score infact the commentrator also said that Iran was only defending and not attacking. 2nd half was a total waste by Iran, good they lost
It suprises me to see Ali Daie still playing at the age of 37. Iran is a very talented team, which won the Asian Championship.
Ali Daie should never have been selected for the national team. A team always needs a young striker, and why would Iran not substitute Daie for a younger player when it was crucial? Because he's the captain? (reminds me of Beckham)
Iran had good control of the first half. Many missed opportunities, and that one save by Sanchez was very impressive. Unfortunately Iran deserved to lose for their poor performance in the 2nd half.
On offense, Iran was too predictable. Most of the efforts went straight to goal. Mexico adjusted this and limited Iran’s chances. Also, most of Iran’s shots were from distance, and many of these were off target. Iran would have been better served showing some variation. They should have taken the ball to the end line for some crosses and to try and win more corners. Then they could have used their superior height to better advantage. Also, holding the ball more would have disrupted the Mexican rhythm more.
For Mexico’s part, they had by far the better attacking chances, but had trouble figuring out the Iranian height advantage in the first half. Their superior team speed wore down the Iranians also. By the end, the Mexican players were still going strong and the Iranians were clearly getting both physically and mentally tired.
Iran’s goal was great, but other than that, I never thought they were in the game. Oh one more thing, this is the first match of this cup where a team has gone down a goal and come back to tie. So good on Iran for that. Great fans in the stands too.
Iran will have to beat Angola and Portugal now to advance. It’s possible, but a steep hill to climb. Oh yes, and props to Iran for clean play. There are so many teams that resort to hacking their opponents and I was very pleased that there was none of that in this match. A lot of class by both sides.
On Angola and Portugal game, Figo surprised the hell out of me. Great game from him. Ronaldo....he needs that one goal to help him out. Once that goal goes we will proboly see alot more of his moves and grace. He was unlucky not to get 2 with the header off the crossbar and that shot. Overall he played well, was more influential on creating space with his beautiful one touch/no look passes. Also there was evidence that he was being very closely watched.
Personally, even though I am glad Portugal won the game. I expected Portugal to score at least one more goal and it was clear this was a poor game for that nation with regards to the standards that they have set for themselves.
Now....I hope Portugal do better with Maniche, Cosintha and Deco in the starting lineup come Iran.
