Well..IMO which I believed in since that game day in 1996 is that SL had badly hit on indian self-believe with their chase in Kotla (indian guppies please correct me if I am wrong) and feeling at that time was that on those slow wickets if you give SL 300 to chase against the indian bowling resources...SL (in that form/confidence) will chase it 9 times out of 10. THAT must have prompted Azhar and rest of indian management to put SL in...and it paid off as SL were put a bit off their games wen they lost both Sanath and Kalu in first over

I just checked out the fall of wickets of the Indian innings from that game. Have to say a few dismissals, particularly Azhar's, look very very dodgy. And who would forget Wasim Akram and his antics before the knock out game against India when he it he morning he showed up with a plastered hand just before the game and excused himself from playing! very dodgy. Gotta agree with Condon (and Latif, Basit, Tilikaratne, and now Kambli)

Nikema, you got it right... Ranatunga was infamous for saying.. "300 is a minimum, 1 run 1 ball, what's the big deal?".. SL was chasing 270-320 down easily every game that season, something that was not very common back then as it is today... it was a systematic destruction of any 270-320 total.. jayasurya and kalu to blast the bowlers for first 15 overs.. and then aravinda and ranatunga to milk them intelligently in the slog overs and chase it down with ease, and with style.
I also find Kambli's remarks dissing Jayasurya's bowling quite stupid.. Jayasurya is not a frontline bowler, but when the conditions are right, he is very potent and dangerous, and he has showed that plenty of times... he really was spinning the ball a looong way.
Also, the comment about "everyone got out like ducks after Sachin".. is not fishy at all.. that was a REGULAR occurance in the indian team of the 90s.. sachin out.. everyone out.. people would turn off the TV sets when Sachin got out.. even if the rest of the chase was not a hard task.
now.. having said that.. Azhar was obviously a cheat! so could he have thrown his wicket away? I would believe that.. he's a proven cheat.. but everyone else? I don't know about that.
more importantly, suspecting fixing simply based on "that looks dodgy, he should have been able to block that" is completely useless..
15 years on.. what's the point? Are any of those batters who got out after Sachin even playing today? So what are we going to investigate? No proof ... simply sour grapes by old retired cricketers who don't get much air time anymore..
I don't blame Kambli for being bitter.. he played well that day.. and if he had won the game for India.. his career would probably have taken a different path... but it's not just to claim fixing 15 yrs after the fact just to get some attention.

of course there was fixing back then, people got banned for life.. doesnt automatically prove that you can take any game from that era and say "oo. that wicket shudnt have had happened, must be fixing"

^ Sharabee - seriously - I did not follow much cricket from say 1984- ~ 2008 except during visits to India, which was not very frequent.

Agree with last para - but looks like for this game, per Pathan's post, there were doubts raised by several parties.
