Workout Questions

So all you gym goers.. I have few question:
Why does my achilles tendon hurt when I run?? I don’t run too fast.. nothing compared to other girls at the gym.. I warm up good before running. I don’t want to get injured so why does it happen and how can I prevent it?
Does your endurance get better with time?? Specially with Cardio exercies?
I take cardio classes which consists of 40-60 people at a time. They are so much better than I am and I wonder if I’ll ever be where they are.
Should running speed matter? Some people run really fast and sweating like anything whereas I run at okayish speed.. hardly ever sweat…

Re: Workout Questions

You need good heel support in your foot wear. But I would suggest going to the doctor because if you do have an inflammation in AT and you continue to work out then it can get worse and you may tear or repute it.
Treatment for mild Achilles tendon problems includes rest, OTC pain medicine, and stretching exercises. You may need to wear well-cushioned shoes and change the way you exercise so that you reduce stress on the tendon. Early treatment works best and can prevent more injury.

Re: Workout Questions

Please don't mess with a painful tendon.

I ended up damaging my elbow tendon just becauee I didn't pay attention to the signs and kept on making it work. Needless to say I learnt my lesson the hard way. bummer

Re: Workout Questions

But thing is .. I am perfectly fine otherwise.. its just running that causes that area to hurt. So I am thinking its maybe the way I run or perhaps bad shoes.

Re: Workout Questions

Sprial, please don't try to push through it! your endurance won't increase with time because it is not related to that.

It is most likely something wrong with the feet i.e flat feet and/or your gait when running. Go to your doctor and have it checked out. If it is flat feet it is easily remedied for running by buying trainers with an appropriate amount of arch. Or your doctor may recommend exercises for you to do to strengthen your arch.

Re: Workout Questions

Try changing your shoes. Well cushioned shoes may help fix the issue. For training/running you need to have appropriate shoes from some good brandname. It may cost a bit (or a fair bit) but this is an investment worth making.
Do you face the same problem during walk/brisk walk? If no, you may be running too fast. Try starting slow e.g., 7.5 km.
If the above does not work, consult a doctor

Definitely yes. I can attest to it through personal experience.

Just stick to it and don't get discouraged. It will get better with time.

Running speed does matter. You should start with a decent speed e.g., 7.5 km and increase it by 10% every 4 weeks. While running, you should be sweating somewhat. Some people sweat more, some sweat less. Generally the faster you run, more you sweat.

Re: Workout Questions

Your muscles are not YET strong to do the job.
Like every one said avoid pain, pain is alarm of your body telling you to stop.

Be consistent, do your own thing enjoy your work outs.
Don't compare things with other people.

Warm down is equally important. Very brief massage, and little stretching through out the day help disperse the bad
fluid.

And again Enjoy..

Re: Workout Questions

Sup Spiral. Aight..i ain't doc yo but are ya talking about knee here?. If ya are then..i used to have similiar issue as yours. Mine was started back in 2008. And it took me up until now to be better. Now..when i walk for long time then i can feel pain a bit. But yo..when i started working out extensively since last year..for some reason i got more better. And all i did was cardio-run with small step on treadmill. Also, don't put too much weight on ya're knees. Keep it relax as much as ya can.
About sweating..well i used to have same issue. Until i lost weight..and my workout has been regular..i sweat a lot when working out. SO!. ya gota keep doing what ya doing. Eventually with time ya're body will used to of working out..ya'll sweat. And usually it is good thing when ya workout.

Re: Workout Questions

Great advice. I am definitely going to look into getting better shoes. I am not too comfortable with what I have right now. Its not exactly knee I am talking about. Just a joint on my right food ... not both. I read that there is a certain way to run.. like heel first or somethin.. gosh all this working out should come with a manual or something.

Re: Workout Questions

Yap..getting better shoes is good choice. Get it from Dr. Scholls..they will be bit pricey eh..but good for your feet..hope ya'll feel better. While ya at it..keep on checkin here and share ya're progress.
