Working Women

Why is it that the same girls who wouldn’t so much as lift a teacup in Pakistan, and would look down upon working outside the home…come here to America and are totally ok with working odd end jobs outside like selling perfume at Macy’s or working in a public school with unruly kids?

Re: Working Women

Hmm. Seems like there’s something wrong with Pakistan, something that keeps them from working. Besides selling perfume or the other job wouldn’t pay much in Pakistan. The incentive to work isn’t there, especially if their Dads pay for everything.

Re: Working Women

Culture. In Pakistan only poor women work and it is seen as degrading.

Re: Working Women

PCG, the same is true for guys. People who would behave like kings in Pk, have Masters Degrees and what not, become cab drivers and burger flippers once they go abroad. As Saeed said, these jobs wouldn’t pay much back home and unfortunately their Pakistani qualification is not considered equal to one obtained in the West. Therefore they end up with those odd jobs.

Re: Working Women

They don’t work in Pakistan b/c mommy/daddy/hubby is funding their lifestyle and there’s not need for them to lift a finger. And also, just b/c they’re doing a odd job in the U.S., that doesn’t mean that they’re “ok” with it. The reasons behind the odd jobs is usually lack of qualifications (education/experience that matters in the U.S.) OR often with retail jobs at malls, immigration status.

Re: Working Women

Pakistan’s culture is a big factor and second big factor is qualification.
