working while pregnant?

did you work full-time or part-time during your pregnancy? If so, how did you manage the morning sickness, frequent trips to bathroom, and other symptoms at work when the coworkers didn’t know you were pregnant. Also, what is approximately the right time and way to share the good news with the coworkers?

I’m about 5 weeks pregnant and the only reason I don’t wanna quit my job is because it took me 5 loong months of searching to get hired! The only thing I’m worried abt is the nausea that may start in the upcoming weeks…and how I’m gonna manage it. Any tips/suggestions/experience?

Re: working while pregnant?

I worked full time through out my pregnancy. You may never get nausea some woman just doesn't feel a thing when they are pregnant. When I was pregnant , my co female workers knew and my hod knew so whenever I was not well I got help. I didn't have any problem in taking leave whenever I was sick. Frequent trips to bathrooms yea I used to do that I didn't care if anyone was looking you don't bother about it. Keep yourself hydrated , eat healthy , make sure you take something to much on while you are at work. Drink juices. Try to get yourself a comfortable chair if you don't have one and occasionally during the day keep your legs at some high place this will help in the blood flow otherwise you might end up getting swelled feet at the end of the day.

Only tell those people who will help you out like female co worker and your boss . Rest of them will come to know when things will start becoming obvious.

Re: working while pregnant?

I worked till the day of my c-section with my pregnancy. I tell folks - I had a meeting in the morning and baby in the afternoon. :)

I got nauseous but never really threw up so I delt with it. With my first baby I told my boss at 2 months and with my 2nd told her at 5 months.

I had a doctor's office right in the building and it was really helpful because at the end of my pregnancy I could go lay down for a 20 minutes.

With my 2nd daughter - I started working from home at 7 months.

Re: working while pregnant?

I worked through most of my 2 pregnancies. My coworkers knew by the 3rd month :)
With my son I had normal nausea, nothing much. But my 2nd pregnancy i had alll day morning sickness and threw up at least 5-6 times a day and was just nauseous 20/24 hours it seemed. What to do? Keep a few plastic bags nearby, keep the trash bin handy too and deal with it. When I felt the nausea creeping up, I made a mad dash to ladies room and thre wup in stall. This happened quite often :(

In meetings I carried a small plastic bag in my pocket, just in case I can excuse myself and use thebag n then make it to bathroom :) It really was horrid, but doable. Just try to focus on the baby Inshallah. Try to have water around all the time, maybe keep a small bottle of mouthwash handy as well as little towels in case of accident.

Also lemon in water helped to ease it, or crackers...etc...anything that helps.

I'm 7 weeks right now and working 9 to 5... my female co-workers (who I'm close to) know and I also told my boss (helps that she's a female too). Its totally do-able, all the posters above me have given good advice... follow that. Where are you located, by the way?

I'm about a 2 hr drive from chicago...and its my first time. hubby will probably have my mom and MIL fly in soon to make sure i don't screw up with delivery stuff or the baby. lol.

Working while pregnant in USA is not problem at all.... Pakistan would be another story altogether thats why I asked :)

Re: working while pregnant?

I worked up until the day I was put on bed rest in my 3rd trimester. During the first trimester no one knew. I'm a teacher and conceived in late spring, so part of my first trimester I was on summer break, but while I was working it was really difficult. Particularly in the mornings. By the middle of the day, I would be okay (my evenings were the worst, but thankfully it was only family that witnessed that!). I had to make sure to have something substantive for breakfast, otherwise I would be in real trouble! I regularly brought in muffins and fruit smoothies and crackers to work and was constantly munching.

I didn't tell anyone until after the school year ended, so keeping it a secret was tricky! We used to go out to lunch together and I was so afraid that would be a dead giveaway! One day I went along and just could not figure out what I wanted and just ordered fries. When I reminded my colleague of that later on and asked if that made her suspicious, she said, "No! Most of us only want to eat the fries anyway!" Another colleague (older and a mother) got clued in at the sight of the big box of saltines on my desk.

Smells from the fridge and others' lunches would force me to excuse myself. The worst was the day one colleague asked me to smell her hummus to figure out what the unique ingredient was. I had to to rush out of there fast! Unfortunately, I couldn't leave my classroom when students had a snack that made my queasy.

During the students' final exam I started seeing spots and had to sit down and start gulping down water. In about 20-30minutes I was better, but I guess the walking around answering questions was too much all of a sudden.

By the Fall I was in my 2nd trimester, everyone knew, and I was feeling great. And people (including the students!) were superconsiderate.

Re: working while pregnant?

I'm in a similar situation-7 weeks into my pregnancy. I have told my manager as I didn't want them to think I was being funny if I had to excuse myself whilst we had a briefing/meeting. She won't tell anyone else-Inshallah I will tell work friends after the 12 week scan.
I currently work part time, however wish I was self-employed which is what I hope to be Inshallah very soon.

Re: working while pregnant?

I just want to add, I was much better at work when I had stuff I needed to do. Being home resting left me too much time to agonize.
