Working @ Telus

Salam doston,

I m looking for some advice in regards to Telus. I have got a verbal offer from a hiring manager @ Telus for an engineering position. Title of the position is Solutions Engineering specialist. The primary focus of this job is to design data/VOIP solutions for business cx’s. Sales would bring in the cx’s requirements and we would have to design and implement the solutions.

I am working @ Rogers right now in Network operations (not an engineering position). Telus is offering me $ 3K less in salary then what I m making @ Rogers, which I m willing to accept since this position aligns with my future goals.

I m wondering if anyone here has worked for Telus. How are their benefits or howz the company overall. The position is located in Markham (Warden and 14th). I have heard that they have great benefits and pay considerable attention towards employee training and development.

Any comments, opinions would be much appreciated…it will definitely help me to make a final decision

Shukria

hsiddiqui ... plz check the info i've sent u in PM.

Re: Working @ Telus

I don’t have direct first-hand experience, but have had friends work for Telus in various capacities related to marketing as well as IT development.

The most common thing I hear is about being overworked and underpaid, but like you, a lot of people find that Telus has provided them with the opportunity where they can make the experience count. In fact when I used to teach Linux device drivers programming and such, I had two students who were hired into development roles by Telus right out of the program and this was really good to see.

Other than that, the work environment is alright. There is however constant monitoring and from what I hear, they like very strict adherence to their KPIs… so make sure you meet whatever project deadlines and performance targets they set out etc.

Re: Working @ Telus

Thanks to both of u for replying

Umar bhai, this is something i havent been told about, especially being underpaid and overworked. But this is something, i think, which can be expected from an engineering specific project based role. It will definitley help me to get my P.Eng and hopefully PMP down the line.

I have talked to ppl who work @ Telus, and they tell me its better then Rogers in terms of employee growth and training. This factor has swayed me towards Telus even though i will be making less then what i am being payed at Rogers currently.

There is also some news that Telus is constructing a new building in downtown Toronto. Anyone heard about that??

Re: Working @ Telus

Re: Working @ Telus

yes its been in the news lately...I think its somewhere on York Street. From what I know, the Telus tower is going to be pretty slick! at $250M it ought to be.

Re: Working @ Telus

I'm actually at TSS (security solutions) dept. which is in downtown (not the 11 king st. though).

The new building is under construction since last year fall, and the occupancy is expected by Jan '09. Location is between Union station and Air Canada Center - the york st. what Umar bhai mentioned.

As far as "underpaid-and-overworked" is concerned, i don't think that is the case in general. It might be some specific cases Umar bhai might have heard of, but generalization can't be true. However, this generalization can be true for overall Canada when compared to US (specially from pay point-of-view) ....... It's a big corporate with about 30k people, i haven't heard such a thing for the last one yr i've been working there. I'd agree with monitoring part though, but every company has that right to its assets.

Re: Working @ Telus

Apparently, Rogers Brampton Campus is amazing too..ah well.

I am suppose to be starting from April 1st..hopefully it works out good.
