Working Out During Pregnancy

Any advice on working out during pregnancy? Water aerobics and activities seem fairly safe; is an hour-two every two days good? also, any thoughts on continuing upper and lower body (not abdominal) weight training during the three trimesters?

Re: Working Out During Pregnancy

one should not workout with weights during pregnancy ..if u have to , do cardio like 3 times a week but its not gonna help you much becuz the weight that ull be gaining over the next few months cant be control by working out.... my advice would be ...do a lil bit of water based cardio, and go with the weights after delivery.

Re: Working Out During Pregnancy

It's ok to do low impact cardio and use LIGHT weights IF and ONLY if you have been doing so consistently prior to your pregnancy. If you have not worked out before then it is not advisable to do so now.

NO ab workouts however...I dont think you would be able to do so even if you tried :D

During pregnancy yoga is best and like FF mentioned...swimming is safe as well...they also have several pregnancy videos that you may want to check out.

Drink plenty of water and listen to your body. As soon as you feel out of breath stop what you are doing immediately.

working out during pregnancy is great if you have been doing so prior to pregnancy. It helps with labor and gets you back into shape post-partum a lot faster.

Alway consult with your OBGYN and get the "go ahead" before starting any workout regime.

thanks frozen fire and angel eyes.

angel eyes, prenatal yoga sounds good, but am also considering water aerobics. something about the first three months being the most risky?

Re: Working Out During Pregnancy

AE did a good job of summarizing it. Always consult ur obgyn first. My ob np told me that doing treadmill and bike were ok as well as lifting light weights. I know that my arms and my legs gained weight and I was sick in the first few months, but I started working out when I got my energy back. Also when u feel a little tired stop what ur doing and rest or even quit ur workout because u have to listen to ur body and not try to over do it. For me the treadmill works best right now...although my doctor said I could use the elliptical I don't use it because I know I will over do it and I want to keep my work out on low key right now. Also with machines I don't use any weights (or low weights that I can handle). I want to do swimming but the gym pool is male-female mix. So can't do that.

Also since I got sick my doctor told me to limit my work out to 20 mins and then gradually increase my time limit as I get used to working out again...

Re: Working Out During Pregnancy

Ditto to what Angel Eyes said. My doctor asked me to continue doing whatever I did before pregnancy. But to take it easy as soon as I become uncomfortable.

If you never exercised, it is a good idea to walk a little every day and increase the distance and speed as you progress. Staying active helps in blood circulation and most of all, helps during labor and delivery.
