What is it like getting a job in a multinational organization in Pakistan? Whats the culture like?
I have often wondered if hiring is quite competitive in those offices and do they provide similar job training and international placement opportunities like thier offices in the west do?
What about the general work culture? is it very desciplined or relaxed?
i heard a few stories about Nokia offices in Lahore and wasnt too impressed .. but then I have only heard all of the stories from only one person .. so not sure how true it all is ..

Culture in multinational based in Pakistan depends totally on the local team running day to day business. I have heard some multinational office in Lahore had terrible office location, working environment, no electricity, health and safety issues etc etc. This is to do with mentality. I am sure not all companies are same. But in general a multinational of USA based will not have a USA type culture in Pakistan, India, Srilanka etc. Neither facilities will be comparable.

I worked in a Multinational Company in Pakistan. I cant say whether the hiring is pretty tough or not because, I have never been refused in interviews no matter where I went for interviews.. the interviewer always asked me in the last, "ok! so how soon can you join?"............. I have been very lucky in getting jobs.
Working there was bit of odd because they wanted to create a very different environment and it included........ Girls can freely smoke and behave like they shouldn't do...... :( or maybe they were at their place, right but my nature was kind of different.
Another thing that I noticed.... because people are so much keen to get a job in Multinational Companies, they never bothered to increase the salaries... it was like hiring and firing process!! Hire someone........if he asks for an increment..they fire him and get another employee!!
I just started working for a multinational company, but this is my first job so I have nothing to compare it with.
The work environment is pretty peaceful, we’ve got a working central AC, the power doesn’t go out(backup generators).
Everyone is very helpful, but that’s probably because our place has a flat hierarchy.
I’m being trained on the job, just the basic stuff, who does what, who to go to when you want something done.
The work culture, hmm. You can do whatever you want as long as you get your job done. There are days when you have a lot of free time on your hands and there are days where you have to burn the midnight oil.
When I tell my dad about my work environment, he says it’s pretty similar to how thing work over in the US and guess what our company IS American.
International job placements. I don’t think they do that, the main reason they have office down here in Karachi is because we’re cheap. They pay us way below the American minimum wage and they’d have to pay us more in case of an international job placement. I work in IT so being on SITE is overrated. High speed internet is all I need to work with my American coworkers or clients.
And I’m allowed to wear jeans and T-shirt on Fridays
Some people wear them on days other than Fridays too, but I’m still on probation:halo:
its not indoors… but it was a sort of. Ok, let me define. Like, they had constructed a seperate room for smoking..with glass doors, where we could see girls and guys are being very VERY friendly with eachother and smoking… even sometimes guys sharing their cigarettes with girls!! seemed awkward to me, but it was too much of an open environtment!!
I know someone who used to work for Nokia offices in Lahore and I think they had several training opportunities open for them .. infact they took an international placement at well and now work in a Europe office ..
hence why I wanted to ask , are other multinational firms similar or are they alot more relaxed , for example , dress code, working environment, professionalism, training etc etc ..

Outsourcing is our business, so no international placements. The most you get is payed visit to the US if you're needed there or have to attend a conference.

TS: Are you trained enough already that you have to burn the midnight oil ?
What kind of tasks are you doing when you do that and what causes working late ?
Unrealistic deadlines ?

Doesn't matter if I'm trained enough or not. You have to schedule some business calls late at the night, because of the different time zones.

Hmm. No use working at a place that makes you uncomfortable.

That sounds more like a problem with local culture rather then emulating NA work culture. There are no glass indoor rooms here to smoke. You can't smoke indoors and being frank with the opposite gender is a personal choice. Can't be blamed on the fact it was an MNC.

It's more like glamorizing the act. At our place smokers have to take it outside. Besides isn't it illegal to smoke indoors.
