You need to get a portfolio together and submit your CV, you may be asked to do a live 'demo' as well. There is a basic salary and a small commission on products sold (some)
They usually hire people who have experience in this field.
Working for Mac / NARS / Sephora ?
My best friend has been in this field for the past 20 years or so. She started working at the Clinique counter at a mid level department store when we we graduated high school and has worked her way up to become the business manager at La Mer in Nieman Marcus. She's been at Estée Lauder, Lancôme, Bobbi Brown, Guerlain etc before crossing over into skin care. Like Gina said, in the beginning you start off just on an hourly wage and make a small commission on products sold, but as you advance, you can make a really good salary. This industry is all about who you know....the more contacts you make the better chances you have at advancement. At least that's how it is in the US department store make up counter environment. Once you get to the Nieman Marcus level, it gets pretty cutthroat lol.
I think you should try for Sephora first, to get your feet wet.
