Working for a company against your beliefs

How many of you would work for a company where you feel their general practices are, in your view, against your beliefs? Esp if you’re still at the point in your work life that you’re not able to be too picky?

Re: Working for a company against your beliefs

Against your religious/political/social beliefs?

Like if I am pro life and working for a company that design BC pills?

Re: Working for a company against your beliefs

:hmmm:

well, my husband has turned down business/investment opportunities (like gas stations and restraunts) because of the sale of alcohol/pork etc…is that along the same lines?

Re: Working for a company against your beliefs

Something like that…though I wanted to keep the truly controversial/moral issues out of it, but yeah, let’s say you get a good opportunity at that company, would you take it?

I guess so. :hehe:

Re: Working for a company against your beliefs

I think it largely depends on individuals. Personally I have turned down offers twice , once from Japan Tobacco and another time from William hill .. both are large companies with excellent turnover.. But one was Tobacco and the other a betting company and both jobs came to me through networking ..

Working in them went against my religious belief, hence I let go of the opportunities without further thought.

yet again, I know a muslim friend, who isnt bothered about such things , so he takes up contracts in any company ... so really its down to the individual values ..

Japan Tobacco happened to me quite early on in my career, I still refused it .. I know there are several people out there, who like me, value the religious principles more then the job opportunity , no matter at what stage of their career they are ...

I also know a Jewish guy, I sent him for an interview for a senior role in a company .. I didnt know and he didnt share at that point that he doesnt shake hands with females out of his religious belief .. he refused to proceed with any further conversations with that company after the first interview, because during the interview, the manager showed concern at the way he conducted himself, after he shared with her that he doesnt shake hands with females ...

At the end of the day, the choices you make, its really down to you as a person.

Re: Working for a company against your beliefs

I had an oppotunity to work for a Company in the Beverage market and then i foulnd out that one important sector for them is all kind of Alcohol which is a no Go for me .... Similar offer like for a Company in the Meat Industry with large Chunks of Business in Selling pork ..... also a No Go for me .....

Allhamdolillah today i work for a PTA in Tech. Department ..... I like the Job as it's really 9-5 so this means proper Time for Family ..... the Payment is good ..... the atmosphere (me being the only Muslim) is great and i'm respected .... at All company functions they take special care while ordering Food ..... I offer my Prayers while being in Office ..... What else can i expect ????

Today i'm glad that Allah SWT gave me the strength to refuse those offers and stay away from such things

Re: Working for a company against your beliefs

No i would not accept, i would trust my faith and wait until the right one came along.

Re: Working for a company against your beliefs

I don't smoke, but I'd probably work for a tobacco company as long as smoking cigs wasn't part of my job description.
I'd work for a weapons manufacturer too(as long as the operations are legal), although I'm against killing people.
I'd even work for a company contributing to environmental degradation, or not. I'm not sure about this one.

I guess I have no moral fiber
