Re: Work System Groups
D@rkNgt, Thanks for that table… but I have a request. Can you summarize the criteria used to classify these various positions neatly in all the cells.
Based on what I remember from my MBA course in OB, the work system classification is based on things like volume of production, performance regulation, financial incentives, career path incentives etc.
The way I think of careers though is to think about them in the form of a continuum rather than as a matrix (like the one you've shown). There are a lot of fuzzy areas. Besides, these days, many of us assume more than one full-time job.
In my own case, I think I’m between Semi-Autonomous and High Skill Autonomous, tending more towards the latter. As a professor, although my primary professional designation is directly classified as High Skill Autonomous, I also do industry research, I teach, undertake consulting engagements etc.

Re: Work System Groups
what about tightly constrained high skill autonomous, with alliances, partnerships, clients, internal clients, regulators, industry analysts, financial analysts, ..you can be an executive level person but still have tight deadlines and a lot of things coming at you with very specific needs.
you work autnomously but have massive constraints that govern and dictate what you can do, cant do, when and how.
Re: Work System Groups
MR.stephen A herzenberg didnt giv us any proposal for ths so ve cant add ths type of system .... in short cant do anyting :)
Thanks for the references dude - but I wouldn’t have asked for a summary of criteria if I had the time to lookup and read the entire articles.
In any case, I’ll try to respond to your questions in the next couple of days.
That’s sort of what I said too… there are just too many fuzzy regions - hence the idea of looking at people’s careers as more of a continuum rather than a matrix. Also, this is more so today when we live along the lines of managing Protean Careers rather than working within well defined job roles.
Re: Work System Groups
i think its not just a continuum, but a multi dimensional model where you can be hanging in diff points for diff initiatives at any given time.
I was recently promoted, and yet I feel I am answerable to more people now :D
