Work Lunch Ideas

At work, I tend to either junk food or chips during my lunch break. I realise this is not healthy or fulfilling, but I don’t like the vegetarian options offered at the canteen, and I don’t have a fondness for the vegetarian options offered from the local shops either. This is probabaly because I find english food bland, especially the vegetarian options; even at home I always choose the desi food over the english orientated foods, such as lasagana or tuna salads as I just don’t have an affection for taste of english food (except fish & chips or pizza!). To make matters even worse, I am also a fairly fussy eater, for example can’t eat raw tomatoes and don’t like cheese or tuna - which rules out the options of sandwiches or pasta for lunch.

So, now I need ideas for food that can easily be made to have as lunch at work, and preferably be desi options or have a desi twist to it as I love the flavours of our food.

What do you guys enjoy for lunch at work?

**What are some-quick desi recipes that could be made and are suitable to be eaten at work? **since I also have to consider that I work in an environment where most of the employees are english/white, so I don’t want something full of so much flavour that as soon I open my lunch container the entire office/canteen smells of my mums kitchen at home.

Would also appreciate any healthy options that can be suggested.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

Get some couscous. Put about an inch in the bottom of a soup bowl. Put last night's leftovers on top. Cover with foil. At work when you are ready for lunch, boil up some water and pour in enough to soften the couscous. Put the cover back on while it softens. It only takes a few minutes, and the salan you put on top is warmed up too. Or, I suppose you could mike it (without the foil!) Don't worry too much about the ENglish being offended by the smell of spicy food. Desi food is their fave, too.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

I work full time...I dont even have the time to cook these days. In the beginning, I was buying lunches...salads and such.

Then, one day out of sheer stubborness...I took pulao to work. It was so good...if they dont like the smell of it...well they can stuff it.

To my surprise...not only did I have my wonderful pulao but they did too! I only had a few bites out of my lunch...:(

Ever since then, I take whatever my mom makes and so far Ive taken:

Saag gosht and rice
Khaosay
Daal gosht
Biryani
Yakhni pulao

Whatever she makes, I take.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

Some ideas :

Make desified chicken salad in a container and keep it with you at work along with a loaf of wheat bread...it helps.
Desi pasta sauce with different types of pastas.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

man, u guys are picky eaters.

I just make a sandwich, whole grain bread, cheese , some sort of meat, homemade roast beef or chicken salad etc. one individual serving container of greek yogurt with fruit, the pomegranate one is my fav these days, a drink, and some random snack.

or I will take some leftovers..nuke machines by the cafeteria, so nuke it there, eat at the caf and get back to my office, so even if it is something highly aromatic its not offending people's noses in that area or smell up my office.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

For my husband i try making different things so that he doesn't get fed up from monotonous lunches, they are also easy to be made.
I usually make him pasta with mix veggies n boneless chicken (for spices i use chili sauce soya sauce, red chili flakes), you can make it on weekend n it can last for 2-3 days without change in taste, n just eat it with some ready made sauces, he usually likes with lite ranch or some Italian sauce.
Then from few days i have tried keeping some boiled pasta, stir fried in Italian sauce, along with it i have kept boneless chicken marinated in again Italian sauce, lemon juice, chili sauce, soya sauce, red chili flakes, salt. I stir fry it in little oil with mix veggies on steam...n give him with lite ranch its really tasty...n everyday you only have to just make chicken n veggies that takes only 5-8 min...
You can take Chinese rice with chicken or even kebabs...salads are the best, try alternatives with fruit veggies beans n meat.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

Thanks for the tips, will try them. Keep the ideas coming tho.

X2 Uncle: 'pickinessness' is my middle name. I forgot to mention that I also can't eat plain yogurts of any flavour or that the food I eat has to look appealing :-p so lets see if you can come up with suggestion that I will actually try.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

Things I love for lunch:
Tuna salad, egg salad, turkey sandwich, feta/ tomato pasta, garden salad with soup.

I don't do anything desi since I hate the smell of it.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

sweetpip baiti, I suppose chips or junkfood look appealing? ;)

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

Not all desi foods smell like same! You have many options.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

you can make chicken wrap out of tandoori chicken/chicken tikka, or kabab roll. you can also make various chinese dishes (noodles - chinese noodles have lots of flavour) or a stir fry with chicken.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

I normally make a sandwich - wholemeal bread, lettuce, chicken/smoked salmon/tuna, normally a little salsa sauce. Or a couple of slices of onion bread and chicken cold cuts, and pasta or stir fry when I have time.

Re: Work Lunch Ideas

Ideas:

  1. Sandwich (so many possibilities here for fillings)

  2. Pasta (so many varieties of pasta)

  3. Salad (could be a salad with leafy greens or a creamy pasta salad. you can even add diced chicken/turkey to it. you can add protein such as meat, beans, and diced egg to make the salad more filling)

  4. Soup or stew

  5. Stir-fry

  6. Pizza

  7. Stuffed pastries (chicken puffs, chicken potpie, shepherd's pie, etc)

  8. Rice (pulao, biryani, Chinese rice)

  9. You can find the above options in frozen meals in the grocery store if you don't have the time to cook.
