what have your work hors been like in different jobs? do you get overtime, or no
from my experience
I work more hours now but have more flexibility, no overtime but face time is not important, as long as I deliver what is needed. for example over the last 10 days, I have worked from 7 a.m. to about 11 p.m. but was able to leave friday at noon, once my big presentation is done, I will be leaving at 3 p.m. today and probably not work past 4:30 the rest of the week and work from home on Friday.
as a consultant, i worked very long hours, with travel time to boot, but received comp time or overtime with one company, and unofficial comp time at another. the travel time added up because if I had to be at 3 clients in a week, I would spend 4-5 hours each day just in transit which was not covered by overtime or comp time.
I did once work at a major company managing an operations team, and work hours were long, there was little flexibility..i.e. ghetting out of the office to run errands, or flexibility on when you take lunch. face time was very important. Needless to say I left the place in a year.
but wat happens if u cant take so many hours.... wat about ppl who needs lots of sleep or if thier sleep patern is disrupted they wont be able to work at all .............. :(
i guess one has to grin and bear it, when I am working crazy hours I know that once the immediate deliverables are completed and I have done a good job with it that the next few days will be pretty easy.
The thankless face time oriented companies where you are just expected to be there for those sort of hours all the time, are not my gig.
The longest I have ever worked ina stretch was 34 hours in 1999 during my stint with a dot com. we had to present the prototype to the venture board, and teh guy running it got sick (BS...he had issues and decided to bail and got fired later) so I had to run the entire thing..kept the entire team there for the whole time except 3 hours break between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. while myself and the other team lead worked on our presentation. the company did get the funding.
wow 34 hours man i got respect for u. i hope u got a bonus ;) . for the precise reaosn my dad has his own accoutning practice kay he can work when he wants and if he doesnt feel liek it he can stay home :D ..... ok he doesnt really do that but sometimes he may be required at home and he can stay... inshallah i hope to have my own business ... take over his or start another one.
waleed I got a bonus as well as a generous amount of additional stock options for pulling the whole thing together..Not that those stock options were worth anything, the company went under later, I bailed before it crashed.
My work schedule at most jobs have been very flexible. It was the work that counted, not the face time I spent at work.
Once I was offered a job where I was told, normal hours are from 8 to 6 but I will have some flexibility. Later my manager refused to let me take unpaid Friday prayer breaks. Even though I worked independently on my own project yet I was forced to follow his rules. He was micromanaging and didn't follow himself what he preached :D
The max. hrs I have worked in a week is 77hrs with no OT.
My work hours are flexible now. Used to work average of 10-11 hours a day and some times weekends too. I really never had any issue with overtime, etc. As saqib said, it was the work that counted, not the face time...
Used to manage 3 different departments at once and part time school was on top of that. My hours are 8.00am till 5.00pm with my own time management. Sometimes it takes longer, depending on the project or nature of the job.
I worked really long hours last year when I was handling ISO implementation issues. This month was very busy due to a long project, which is almost finished.
Well i am working for 6 months as an intern. So i have no fixed working hours. But Since Cancun is 1 month away, i am putting in between 12 and 15 hours a day. Thus i am sick as a dog right now and working from home the same hours.
I will be putting in these many hours till the 1st of October. Hopefullz Cancun will be a success and i will get less work after october.
Note: Cancun is the WTO ministerial for the Doha Round. Just like you had the Uruguay Round which lasted 6 years and created the WTO, you have this round for further liberalization of the trade regimes around the world.
