Once I leave work in a few days I want to look into doing some work experience in an IT firm, while I look for a new job. Figure, rather then sitting on my butt won’t do me any harm to try and get new skills or keep up to speed with the ones I do have.
Just I am not to sure how to go about this.
Should I just directly contact companies and ask? Or is trying to get some kind of voluntary work somewhere a better way of doing it.

well u could directly apply to the companies and offer to do some voluntayy work for e.g. say 6 weeks or so, and then quit the job... this way u would gain some experience, job, looks neat on ones' CV and this count as vouluntary work as well.
This is wot my friend did, it worked well for him. Besides it's a lot better than sitting at home for longterm and having nothing to do, if u know wot i mean.
