Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

I am curious to know if there are many people on this forum who work from home - either as self-employed or as a virtual employee. Please do share:

  1. What you do,
  2. How long you have been doing it and
  3. Are you happy with your career?

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

I work from home on a regular basis. I am IT manager. I have been doing it for 10 years. I love my job.

Good for you!

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

I work partly from home. Since my daughter started in Pre-K I have to drop her off and pick her up before coming to work. I start from home at 6:30 AM work till 7:40 AM then drop off my daughter, start work again from home at 8:10 AM work till 10:40 AM, go pick up my daughter, come home, get ready and go to work around 12:40 PM and work till 5:00 PM.

I m a programmer/Database Administrator. I only started working from home since August. I m very happy with my job since I wanted to be a programmer my whole life (Took some time to get there).

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

I work as a project manager and for 3 years and sure it's okay

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

for some of us there are no work/home boundaries - work is pervades every aspect of life, every routine, every place... thanks (or no thanks) in part to the ubiquity of technology that "facilitates" it all - Darn email, IM, extranets, vpns, FTP, social media et al.

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

^ maybe a generalization but I feel guys have a hard time defining work/home boundaries or perhaps it's the nature of work.

My friends that are DBAs for banks get no break - they are always on call.

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

^ I think it's the nature of work...

  • When I worked for the govt., I hardly did any work from home... mostly because no one else worked after 6:00 pm and there was no expectation that you'd be working.
  • When I was in the private sector, I used to work from home every now and then, primarily to meet deadlines for specific projects...
  • As a management consultant and then as an academic, it's just been non-stop work all the time. If I don't explicitly indicate to my colleagues that I won't be working on a certain day, there's always an expectation of collaborating on stuff... hell, we even send emails back and forth at 6:00 am on a Saturday.

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

I work remotely when i want, unless I have in person meetings I can choose to work from home any day, however I like the office and interactions so go in most days.

work is non stop, not just directly related to work projects but conferences, industry events, writing white papers, articles and blogs for work stuff. much of that is evenings and weekends.

***I wonder if I can treat patients online & get paid for it :hmmm:

Have a Web Clinic ! Life would be Awesomeeeeeeeee :!!***

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

On a lighter note, there is nothing so freeing as working in one's pyjamas. All the crappy ideas that colleagues send through aren't as frustrating if you're going through them while wearing slippers.

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

I do not work from home but I hate it. My ex-boss used to keep a vigilance 24/2 or even from holidays!

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

Means gynaecologist (doctor) however I have trained in Fetal echocardiography as well

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

In my kind of work (production support), there is very little opportunity to work from home but every now and then I do work from home. I am not very keen about it for many reason.

  1. Many of my references are hard copy notes and drawing sheets that are sitting in our small library at work. I need them a lot for my work.
  2. Discipline that I get once I sit at my desk at work is hard to come if I am logged on from my kitchen table. Lots of distractions at home.
  3. On a similar note, the guilt of taking even a 5 minute break when I am working from home is too heavy on me. Somehow a 15 minutes chat with my coworker seems fine if I am at work while 5 minute coffee break when telecommuting seems too unethical. I feel like I am stealing from my company.
  4. I cant connect myself to my home printer (at least not wirelessly), plus we dont have tabloid size tray attached to our home printer and I need hard prints a lot for my work that I cant get if I am working from home.

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

Remote diagnostic , treatment and surgery are now a reality.

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

Yeah but I think that still requires being part of a hospital set up and web-consulting ....it isn't something you can do from home like the way you do for example !***

Re: Work at home, telecommute, work remotely?

I have been wondering that for a long time Sheyn...!!
