WordPress Site Administration

I’m volunteering for a charitable organization whose web admin just went MIA, and I’ve accepted to look after their website.
It’s based on WordPress and I have downloaded all the files on my local machine.

Just wondering what’s the fastest route to get started with administering the site and making changes as needed. I’ve never worked with a WordPress shell so kinda new to this area. Any advice or resources would be appreciated. Again, I’m asking here to get first-hand opinions… most of the Google search results are overly detailed and I’m hoping for a QuickStart guide of some sort.

Re: WordPress Site Administration

  • Install LAMP/WAMP on your machine and run the site locally .
  • Play around with it thats the fastest way to learn it .
  • For any added functionality , search Google for WP plugins .
  • Good luck

Re: WordPress Site Administration

what is a wordpress shell ?

Re: WordPress Site Administration

I don’t mind exploring but was hoping for a step-wise approach to help with getting up to speed faster… esp. since I’m doing this in my free time which I don’t really have much of.

I use the term “shell” as a catch-all for framework/environment/themes/templates etc. - not to be confused with command/interactive shell for OS.

Re: WordPress Site Administration

^LC you might be able to find some Youtube videos for it , but again there is no step by step instructions for it . Just install it and configure one site and you’ll grasp the whole idea . Way better than watching tutorials .

Re: WordPress Site Administration

Wordpress is the easiest CMS of all and every feature in the admin panel is self-explanatory.

Re: WordPress Site Administration

There are about 2 or 3 different shell scripts for WordPress but they are not as good as drush for drupal

Re: WordPress Site Administration

LC, you just log into the Admin site (usually Agentforce 360 Platform (Formerly Salesforce Platform) | Salesforce) and make all changes and mods in that interface. There are either blog entries or pages that have to worry about.
As someone suggested, play around with the interface once you login to the Admin interface. If you don’t have that login info see if you can get access to the MySQL database and we can do a password reset.

Not that I’m a wordpress expert or anything but ping me directly if you have specific questions and i’ll try and help.

Re: WordPress Site Administration

What you need is “DesktopServer”

install it on your PC (most of it is automated, no need to mess with LAMP, etc.) if you want to play around and get to know what its like making change to wordpress site.

Re: WordPress Site Administration

I have personally found youtube tutorials helpful. Like @TofiBaba and @NaMaan said, once you log into the admin interface, it is easy to figure out.

Re: WordPress Site Administration

WordPress site is the easiest and most economical option. As an admin you can log on to Salesforce1*Platform: Trusted Application Development Platform - Salesforce.com and make any changes you want. Create pages, add text etc. If you want to add any more functionality there are millions of plugins around there. Moreover, you can also get ready made themes which are just drag and drop.
