Although I am biased being a Pakistani where we are almost certain to want some head chopped off for the cricketing spriral we see England in, I still feel England needs more than nerves to come out of the rut they have dug themselves into.
I mean ODI performance are abhorring and they are in shambles in Tests as well.
So I would think they need a change in their coaching.
Thoughts?..
Also, no matter what people say, I am so glad that ENGLAND did not hire Woolmer in 1999 as their coach...
If that would have happened , we might not have had the benefit of Woolmer for Pakistan. Everybody has shortcomings, however, Woolmer has had a hugely positive impact on the Pakistan team. And PCB need to get their act together and keep this guy for a long time. I think if after the WC we change captains, it will be even more required to atleast keep the coaching head unchanged.
What i gathered from PCB's reaction is that they are only going to renew Bobby's contract if Pak manages to win the WC.Lets see how that goes... i feel that another desi coach might be ready to make an enterance after WC.
I personally think that Australia would go for Moody (Hussey openly voiced his support for him recently) who's presently SLA coach after WC 2007 which would mean Greg Chappell staying as the Indian coach. That would leave Woolmer having to decide b/w PCB and ECB. From some of his statements re. pay rise etc. in the past he seems quite materialistic. He could easily fetch more ((than the £80K (+ perks) that the PCB pay him annually)) as an English coach but then no other cricket board would allow him to make so many 'holiday' trips to SA.
This plus Pakistan's performance in WC 2007 will be the key.
I think there is too much hype re. the importance of WC. Even if (a very big if) we somehow win it, it would n't make us the best team in the world. Pakistan won the WC in 1992 but that did n't make us the best team in the world. Infact in the very next one-day series in England we got thrashed 1-4. That said there was no clearly dominant or overwhelmingly favourite team then (like the Windies 1975-1990 and Aussies 1999-2007). The same holds true for India in 1983 and SLA in 1996. Only the Windies sides who won the WC in 1975 and 1979 and the Australian teams who won the WC in 1999 and 2003 could rightfully claim to be the best side in the world.
yeah that's what I said ...I think they should atleast think about better coaching options.
I think Miandad will be a good coach for them.
He will make them "phit".
Having a foreigner as coach removes the element of politics within the team to a certain extent but Woolmer we all know has a few favourites in the team. I am not so sure about his 'huge impact'. Our fielding has n't really improved and I only judge a team/player/coach/captain by their away (outside subcontinent) performances
The three series that really mattered
2004 v Australia white-washed 0-3
2006 v England lost 0-3 (technically 0-2)
2007 v SA...... let's wait and see
I have been saying this all along that Pakistan's improvement in Test rankings (we were ranked 4th when Miandad left the scene) to no. 3 or 2 over the last three years or so is largely because of their home wins. Inzi's been quite fortunate in that regard. The only other away series we have played in during that time are India 2005 (drew 1-1, three-test series) SLA 2006 (won 1-0, two-test series) and WI 2005 (drew 1-1, two test series) but then we always expect Pak to do well in India and Sri Lanka.
Yes Inzi led us to 1-0 win (two-test series 2003-4) in NZ, thanks largely to Akhtar's heroics in the second innings but that was (under Miandad) before Woolmer's time.
There's actually a google (pepsi) video of Miandad giving coaching tips. But the language is too vulgar and obscene for it to be posted in a family forum. I am sure most of you guys n gals have watched THE clip already. :D
