Woolmer replaces Miandad as Pakistan's Coach (Merged)

First of all, if this news is true, it is a great piece of news HOWEVER the last foreign coach we had (Richard Pybus) was unceremoniously dumped and had a tough time getting through to the players so what makes us think anything will change? Our players hardly speak any English, how will they communicate? Will our players all of a sudden start displaying respect for the game and for their teammates? I doubt it.

I do think we will see some technical improvements, such as fewer extras, more focus on the basics of the game, improved fielding, better strategy and better scouting of opponents. I also think the younger players will be more receptive to the coach, speaking of the Yasir Hamids, Mohammed Samis and Shoaib Maliks of the world. At the same time, this new coach will not guarantee a more cohesive unit, that is something that must come from within. With "badboys" like Shoaib Akhtar, Razzaq and occasionally Moin on the team, he will sooner or later have to lay down the gauntlet. Given the precedence of Pakistani cricket, when a player clashes with a coach, the player inexorably wins.

Still, some silver lining in the cloud of gloom that is Pakistani cricket.

Didn’t surprise me. It had to happen. Be it Cricket, hockey or other sports, our sports ministry/media always come hard on coaches when they lose to India.

It’s just a game. Can’t they live with that.

Yep…and I’ll be first one to do so. That’s my promise! :k:

However, good luck to Woolmer. You gonna need it in communication!

I m not sure about this. Woolmer is for sure a professional and highly respected coach but how well he can do in Pakistani setup, that remains to be seen. I feel for Miandad, he is a hardworking coach, just over does things..

Most of them thought that with the politics of Pakistani cricket it remians to be seen how long he will last.

exactly my thoughts... Though i hope he delivers. Every new coach brings some temporary success but i hope induction of woolmer makes success a habit for pakistani cricket team.

apparently a good news, I hope Miandad keeps quiet sitting outside now so I can keep the left respect for him. good luck to Woolmer and our Pakistani team, :insha: it will bring good changes.

Saby bhai, maybe things are about to change in terms of set up and culture with Shehryar and Ramiz in charge.

Pakistan have sacked coach Javed Miandad

i couldn't find a section dedicated to Sports in GS neither this news was enough important to be posted in pakistan affairs section so i am posting it here

Miandad might have done a lot good for Pakistan as a batsman and his "Chakka at Sharja" can never be forgotten but i dont think he was
a better coach still then i believe some pakistani coach should have been given the chance instead of Bob Wolmer

KARACHI: Pakistan have sacked coach Javed Miandad after losing the recent Test series to India.

Miandad will be replaced by former England batsman Bob Woolmer, who is currently the International Cricket Council's high performance director.

Pakistan lost the Test series 2-1, which was the first time they had played India at home for 15 years.

Miandad was contracted until April 2005 but had made it known he was unhappy at the criticism levelled at him.

"His contract has been terminated," PCB chairman Shahryar Khan told a news conference.

"We offered him to serve as national cricket advisor but he has declined."

Miandad was one of Pakistan's greatest ever batsmen, scoring 8,832 runs in 124 Tests and 7,381 in 233 one-day international appearances, and was a member of the 1992 World Cup-winning side.

Previous spells as coach ended in 1999 and 2001, but he was re-appointed following the team's first round exit from last year's World Cup in South Africa.

Expectations were high on both sides ahead of India's first full series in Pakistan for 15 years, but ultimately it was the tourists who had the edge.

They won the one-day series 3-2 and then triumphed by an innings and 131 runs in the deciding Test in Rawalpindi to secure a 2-1 victory.

The PCB's response was to order a full investigation into a series of injuries which hampered the team's chances.

And the PCB was recently summoned by parliament to explain why the team had been defeated by India.

Woolmer has signed a contract until the World Cup in 2007.

Khan added: "We have convinced Bob Woolmer to take over as coach.

"It was not easy to get a coach of Woolmer's status, who is a pioneer and highly respected, but through negotiations we have convinced him to take the job before the Asia Cup until the 2007 World Cup in West Indies."

Woolmer will join the squad on 2 July before they head to Sri Lanka to defend their Asia Cup title.

The Cup tournament takes place between 16 July and 1 August.

^ i certainly hope so. Ramiz is a decent and sane man but Shahryar so far has demonstrated that he is an emotional man who makes decisions in haste. Anyways this decision is the best one in recent times.. Hope woolmer deleivers...

Are you sure? Anyway, moved.

Ehsan Bhai,

As long as its not between India and Pakistan, I will be rooting for Pakistan. Yeh Wada Raha!!!.

astaghfirallah.. :maulvidis

I have no doubts that Woolmer is an excellent coach. But let me interrupt your celebrations here, the Pakistan Squad is no South Africa. Things won't be easy especially because of the great language barrier. I think they should have hired a translator with Woolmer LOL. Anyways, things can't get any worse so lets sit back and enjoy the show :)

Ironic with a nick like PakistaniAbroad, (ABROAD Being the Key word)

You are preaching about Ferangi’s. It say’s a lot about you!!!

for the language issue, apparently Woolmer has requested that a local assistant coach be attached to the team mainly for interpretation issues. and one name being floated is that of Aqib Javed's. I think he would be a good choice. he is a non-controversial sort of guy, gets along with most people. by shadowing Woolmer, maybe he will become an able coach himself.

Woolmer has also asked for a physio by the name of Adrian Gray I believe who has been appointed as per his wishes. he will join the squad after the Asia Cup. Also, read that Woolmer is trying to get in touch with Pak players playing in England to start developing a relationship with them.

Wow Wow and Wow! Sahee ka murgha phasaya.
I remmeber PCB tried to reach Woolmer couple of years ago but he declined at that moment. I wonder what made him to accept the position.

Is it true that woolmer's pay is actually less than Miandad used to get?

i welcome woolmer's appointment with a caution...not that i have any doubt in his ability...as a matter of fact he is an extremly talented coach and we are lucky that he accepted to join the "gutter of paki cricket".....the only reason i am little careful and skeptical is becasue i know my team and my own people really well..............with so much jealosuy, lack of commitment, bhadday baziee, hatred and personal egos we are now one of the most undisciplined unit....i can only hope that things will get better....dont compare SA and pakistan teams...both teams have different cultre......and here is an example...do u think that u can appoint a 22 year old guy incharge of paki team .......well SA did that and no one ever protested and every one kept playing to his true potential........ so this example pretty much speaks for itself when it comes to the cultre difference between the both teams.....

well lets hope for the best......i have to say that i am very very happy from inside but i am also very scared.........because if woolmer also leaves with disappointment or gets sacked then ????.................one thing i wud like to mention for sure that please please, let him operate till 2007....and for godsake give him freehand..............................just trust him..he is an outsider and let him fix the team......let him kick some asses if he thinks it is necessary......

i really really hope that he will finish players-power cultre from our team.....we do not need wasim and waqar who always played to their own agendas...we need medicores but who play to their full potential with full commitment....it is better to have 11 average players in a team with all of them moving in one direction rather than having 5 or 6 genuis all heading in different direction..........

The Game Responds:

*They will sack Woolmer and ridicule him too; just wait and watch. Oh Pakistanis, and their raging hormones. Really. People, That Is All.*

Miandad a great player of the game of Cricket. Period.

Never was a coach. But he was of MQM and Altafs favourite…I hope he wont shout ** FOUL** at this,
Now in Pak cricket affairs you’ll have more “WE” than “I”, i guess,
my $ 0.2 on this… :dhimpak:
