Woolmer calls for Pakistan focus

Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer believes his team must hit top form to beat England in the Test and one-day series.
Having been comprehensively beaten in Pakistan during the winter, England could only draw 1-1 with Sri Lanka and lost the first two one-day games.
“I expect a backlash and know we have to be at our best to win in England,” said Woolmer, who could be without Shoaib Akhtar and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan.
“We have performed well without those two so we have enough resources.”
Akhtar, who took 17 wickets against England in the winter series, battled his way back from knee surgery in February, but has since been afflicted by a recurrence of an ankle problem.
He was left out of the original 16-man squad to tour England but had a scan this week and could still feature this summer.
“There are positive signs of improvement,” Woolmer said. “We will not rush him into international cricket so we will see.”
Naved took 34 Championship wickets for Sussex this season before damaging his groin against Middlesex at the end of May.
He will be assessed again on June 28 and Woolmer confirmed: “If he needs surgery he will be out of the tour.”
Meanwhile, Naved’s county colleague Mushtaq Ahmed, who has 47 wickets already to his credit, could return to the Pakistan team for the first time since 2003.
“He has pressed selectors hard with his performance in the English season,” Woolmer observed. Pakistan begin their tour with a match in Scotland on June 27, and play four Tests, before a five-match one-day series that concludes on September 10.
