I’ve never come across a source that clearly identifies guidelines for the hair length of a female’s hair.
All I’ve heard is fatwa chatter saying women’s hair should be shoulder length to maintain the identity that she actually is a female.
Then on the other hand you have men who grow their hair long because its “sunnat”; wait a second . . . doesn’t that blur the line of differentiation between a man and a woman? does he not looking more like a female?
Women whom naturally have short hair, what of them? or those who have to keep short hair for a particular reason even if it is fashion?
The identity of a woman can be preserved through many features and thats not only the length of the hair.
Why is there a restriction on it but never any clear cut guideline?
Please elaborate on this topic with sources for all of us to further understand this shadey issue.
men in islam are allowed to grow hair upto their ear lobes not below them, if they are below ear lobes it breaks the sunnat and secondly they aren’t proper gaesu.
why??? well allah now’s best y there is restriction who are we to argue against his will, we follow rules not make them or CHALLENGE them like u are doing. quran must have something on this issue or the teachings of the blessed prophet mohammed (pbuh) must have something on this issue its just a matter of looking hard and finding them.

would love to if i could, i have an arbaic quran and i don't know how to search in it. the contents page is in arabic which i can't work out, but hopefully some one will provide proof.
alrite, so i looked up some info...this is one of those highly debated issues with different schools of thoughts saying different things...
in the hanafi school of thought, women are not allowed to cut more than 2 cms of their hair...
in all other schools of thought, the general consensus is that women are allowed to cut their hair, as long as they don't cut it boyishly short...and they are not allowed to shave their heads off...
they can cut their hair short, as long as it still looks feminine...i.e. with layers etc...
as for men, same rule applies...they can grow their hair as per the sunnah, but it should not be so long as to be confused with the other gender...hair should not be below the neck line for men...
as for Quranic ayah's, i didn't come across any...even the above mentioned guidelines are as per the Holy Prophet (PBUH)'s sunnah, and what has been narrated by the companions...
It’s relative.. If they don’t trim, they may become unattractive to some.. and attractive to the rest.
These are EXACTLY the kind of issues where today’s Muslim should take a deep breath..sit down and analyze how stupid he sounds worrying about such matter of fact things..
Muslims are being bulldozed the world over and the only thing that makes them lose sleep is how long their beard should be or how short their women’s hair should be cut
If it is indeed stupid to be curious about the semantics behind these frivilous rules then, I apologize. We follow blindly so why not find out and get it settled once and for all.
On another note, it does not mean that you can peg those who inquire the type of questions to be losing the essence of religion and not worry about the big picture in the world. There is a fine balance between the two which all of us try to achieve.
CocoNut. there is nothing against women getting their hair cut as far as I know. The wives of the Prophet would cut their hair to be just below their ears. Whats disallowed is shaving it completely (i think) and cutting it such that it resembles the kuffar. Again that is only an identity issue as muslims should make themselves distinct from the non-muslims, and does not apply on women only. And if the woman is doing Hijab as per the guidelines of Shariah, then only her mehrems would be seeing her hair anyway and she can keep her hair in any way or form which pleases her and her husband.
PA, Fraudia, what are you guys talking about? Less than a percent of muslims today are worried about the length of their beards or the length of their hair. How many people do you actually see these days following the guidelines to the letter? less than a percent?
How can those people be responsible for the current condition of muslims? Its those that have started forgetting their religion who are responsible for the mess, as they've allowed the kuffar to break in and destory us.

Dude... care to provide any evidence for these statements? Its one thing to say whatever you want, another to portray it as god-given commandment. Thankyouverymuch.
I think insolent mods is incorrect in his statement. Whats disallowed is 'imitation'. If we look around we'll notice certain hair styles are specific to men, and some others are specific to women. Men CAN have long hair as long as its not a feminine hair style and vice versa.

Agreed. It's just hair, and has nothing to do with ones belief in Islam.
Response: I do not know of anything [wrong] in cutting a woman’s hair. It is not allowed to shave all of it off. You cannot shave off the hair of your head but you may shorten its length. I do not know of anything wrong with that. However, that should be done in a good way that is pleasing to you and your husband. You should agree upon how it is going to be done. Also, it should not be in imitation of the disbelieving women. If you leave it long, it makes it more difficult to wash it and tend to it. If it is long or thick and a women cuts it short or layers it, there is nothing wrong with that. Or she may cut part of it short to make herself more beautiful to herself and her husband. I do not know of anything wrong with that. However, one may not shave all of it off. This is not allowed except in the case of some disease or problem.

this doesn't make sense: suppose you cut two times two cm = 4 cm....what then? becuz u only have cut 2 cm (twice) as according to their law?
and how long do u have to wait before cutting again?
suppose u cut 2cm...and wait a week (hair grows 1 mm)...and then u cut 2 cm again.....this way u have cut 3.9cm in 2 weeks...and u haven't cut the hair at once???

Kuffar of Prophet Mohammed PBUH's times? Or todays? because "boyish" cut girls are very much available everywhere, so men and women shouldn't have "boyish cut", "long hair" men and women of kuffar are also present everywhere so we can't have long hair to .... where should we go?
It was narrated in Saheeh Muslim that Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan said: “The wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to cut their hair until it came just below their ears.” (al-Hayd, 320)
PA,
I was always of the assumption that Amish beards were without mustaches? And how many people actually keep those? The shar'ee beard is still considered to be a sign of the muslims.
