If someone consistently disrespects you, would you say that they love you? Is respect not a part of love? In a relationship, the love will evolve from that passionate and heady stage to a stage that is more calmer/comfortable/settled. But in each stage of its evolving, respect is essential. It's a foundation.

Love is always possessive. When you love someone you start caring for that person, but if there is no balance, then results are different. Sometimes, its violence and sometimes its agreeing on things which should not be agreed (like Joru ka ghulaam situation).

I think one can live a decent life without love, but not without respect. A lot of arranged marriages aren't based on love but slowly overtime you begin to care for each other. Compared to that, a lot of love marriages fail even though there was passionate love and the couple fought the world to be with each other but the problems along the way and not standing up for each other after marriage lead them to a miserable life together.
Respect is essential in any relationship.
